Valley Stream man charged with driving while intoxicated

A Valley Stream resident, who was driving, was stopped by Nassau County police and found to be intoxicated at 10:44 p.m. on Sept. 5, police said. Officers saw a 2024 Honda CRV traveling west on Sunrise Highway failing to stay in one driving lane. Police stopped the vehicle near Brooklyn Avenue and 6th Street in Valley Stream. After the subsequent investigation, Elmer Martinez-Serrano, 28, of Derby Street, was arrested. A three-year old girl was a passenger. She was released to a family member.

Valley Stream mourns football standout Ryan Icart, 18

Ryan Icart, a 2026 graduate of Valley Stream Central High School who died suddenly on Aug. 16, was remembered by his family and friends as a compassionate, funny and energetic young man whose warmth and generosity touched everyone around him. He was 18 years old. A standout lineman for Central's varsity football team, Icart was preparing to begin an exciting new chapter playing football at Monroe University in New Rochelle, where he had earned a scholarship and planned to study finance.

Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Valley Stream Central High School District 5K in honor of 9/11

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation and Valley Stream Central High School District will host the “Honoring 25 Years of Resilience”5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Sept. 12, at VSC High, 135 Fletcher Ave., in Valley Stream. The race starts at 9 a.m., rain or shine. The event marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, honoring heroes and victims while supporting Tunnel to Towers' mission of providing mortgage-free homes to families of fallen first responders and severely injured veterans.
