Transformation could be coming to Inwood
Lifelong Inwood resident David Hance remembers throwing rocks at the remaining windows of the unused and rundown Rockaway Metal Products building at 175 Roger Ave. in the Five Towns community when he was a kid. Hance, now a successful business owner and president of the Inwood Civic Association, views the site that could be transformed into a 68,000-square-foot warehouse on nearly 5 acre parcel as a promising restart for a property that was once contaminated and off the tax rolls.

Will Gene Editing Make Rich People 'Superior'
Rich transhumans, many of whom are associated with Silicon Valley and Big Tech, fully expect that gene editing will take over the process of evolution, allowing them to design humanity 2.0. They are wrong, but that won’t hinder their efforts. ⁃ TN Editor At a time when new technology such as gene editing offers unprecedented control over our own biology, the latest wave of medical advances, including powerful DNA-editing technology like CRISPR/Cas9, is a source of excitement and optimism.
CRISPR/Cas gene-editing technique holds great promise, but research moratorium makes sense pending further study
CRISPR/Cas is a new technology that allows unprecedented control over the DNA code. It’s sparked a revolution in the fields of genetics and cell biology, becoming the scientific equivalent of a household name by raising hopes about new ways to cure diseases including cancer and to unlock the remaining mysteries of our cells. The gene editing technique also raises concerns. Could the new tools allow parents to order “designer babies”?
Math shows how DNA twists, turns and unzips
If you’ve ever seen a picture of a DNA molecule, you probably saw it in its famous B-form: two strands coiling around each other in a right-handed fashion to form a double helix. But did you know that DNA can change its shape? DNA molecules, which carry the genetic code of an organism, have to be tightly packed to fit inside a cell. However, every few hours, the cell produces a faithful copy of its genome in preparation for cell division.
Scientists are using DNA to study ocean life and reveal the hidden diversity of zooplankton
Marine zooplankton are tiny animals, roughly the size of insects you might see on a summer day, that drift with ocean currents. Many of them are lovely, but except for scientists who study them, few people are aware that they are among the most numerous – and important – animals on Earth. My research focuses on marine zooplankton, which I think of as “charismatic microfauna.” These minute organisms are key players in open ocean food webs and critical as they are the preferred food for many fish.
GMOs Lead Fight Against Zika, Ebola And Next Unknown Pandemic
The shadow of the Zika virus hangs over the Rio Olympic Games, with visitors and even high-profile athletes citing worries about Zika as a reason to stay away (even if the risk is probably quite low). The public’s concerns are a striking example of the need to rapidly combat emerging infectious diseases.
GMOs Could Save Your Life-They Might Have Already
The earliest vaccines were primitive – think Edward Jenner in the 1790s inoculating against smallpox by rubbing together the open wounds of uninfected patients and those with cowpox. But over the years, advances in medical technology led to improved vaccines. The modern age of vaccines was ushered in by the introduction of molecular biology tools in the 1970s, which vastly improved our ability to study and manipulate viruses.

Did Harvard Scientists Secretly Discuss Making a Human from Scratch?
Home News When ethically fraught science is discussed behind closed doors, people get suspicious. (Image: © Lightspring / Shutterstock.com) Did you hear about the secret meeting earlier this month at Harvard Medical School? The one where scientists schemed to create a parentless human being from scratch? Maybe you read one of the skeptical news articles, or the stories illustrated with images from the dystopian sci-fi classic “Blade Runner” or of a robot Frankenstein.
