AI economy offers growth, but communities need guardrails
As of May 2026, the national conversation surrounding artificial intelligence has shifted dramatically from excitement to infrastructure. The question is no longer whether AI will reshape the economy — it already is. The real question now is how communities will respond to the physical footprint required to support AI. Last October, I wrote about the rise of AI data centers and the opportunities they could bring to Kentucky and communities like Hardin County.
Letter: Homes, not houses
With Hunter and the two developments on Spring Street, we are faced with building over a hundred new houses and condominiums over the next few years. We need to ensure that these developments produce homes where people live, not just second or third houses for people who don’t live here. A house might be an architectural gem, but without people it's just a building and contributes no life to our community. There are grants and incentives to help low-income folks.
What are Opportunity Zones?
Opportunity Zones, introduced under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, are designed to promote investment and economic growth in low-income areas across the United States. By offering tax incentives, these zones encourage private-sector development, creating jobs and revitalizing underserved economies. kAmv@G6C?@CD 2?5 DE2E6 @77:4:2=D ?@>:?2E65 6=:8:3=6 ?6:893@C9@@5D[ C676CC65 E@ 2D 46?DFD EC24ED[ 7@C ~AA@CEF?:EJ +@?6 56D:8?2E:@?] ~?46 2AAC@G65[ E96D6 2C62D >2:?E2:? Letter: Refunds aren't so fun
Last week's Star editorial on taxes ("Filing taxes without fear," March 21) makes it sound wonderful for folks to get a refund for 2023. It certainly feels good but it's not really so wonderful. Getting a refund means you actually lent the government that money all last year for free. It's wonderful for Uncle Sam, but not you. It may seem counterintuitive, but it makes more sense to owe the government a little money at tax time. And yes, I know it's easier said than done! Jeff Farmer St. Helena
Letter: Event on Kennedy legacy
Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Save Next week marks the 60th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Some of us of a certain age remember that date well. St. Helena City Council needs Chouteau's experience
The city election will give us a new mayor and at least one council member with little or no demonstrable civic experience. New blood is good but it needs to be balanced by experience. Anna Chouteau brings stability, experience and institutional memory, which is sorely needed as we move forward. She also has a countywide perspective learned from her run for supervisor. This knowledge will be needed as work with other Upvalley communities to address mutual needs for water and fire protection.

How Hospitals Can Recoup Millions in Lost Revenue
Jeff Farmer, Healthcare Solutions Manager, TransUnion Healthcare - Thursday, July 11th, 2019 Print | Email Patients are taking on more of the financial burden for their medical care. That’s even when they have personal healthcare insurance plans or are eligible for state or federal benefits. This can lead to unpaid (or partially paid) medical bills, which has major adverse impacts on U.S. healthcare systems across the nation.
