Ventura County residents deserve safer, more reliable electricity
Ventura County residents should not have to choose between wildfire safety and reliable electricity. Southern California Edison’s Public Safety Power Shutoffs have left families, businesses, and entire communities facing prolonged outages, often with little certainty about when power will be restored. While preventing wildfires must remain a top priority, the frequency, duration and disruption of these shutoffs demand greater accountability.

I’m 93, and I was a mailman in Hollywood from 1955 to 1957. At that time, there was a common belief that if you put your mail in a post box before the last pick-up listed on the box, it would be postmarked on that same day. But I was recently talking with a postal employee, and he told me that the ONLY way you can guarantee that it will be postmarked on that day is to take it into the P.O. and hand it to the clerk. He or she will stamp it right in front of you. I tested this, and he was right.
Lewis Road project should include a Project Labor Agreement
Ventura County has an important opportunity before it: the development of the Lewis Road Mental Health Rehabilitation Center, a 38-bed, 22,000-squarefoot facility that will expand access to critical behavioral health services for our community. This investment of your tax dollars, supported by California’s Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Pro- gram, is not just about infrastructure—it is about dignity, recovery and long-term stability for some of our most vulnerable residents.

Some still feel weight of Mountain fire
As I reflect on one year since the Nov. 6, 2024 Mountain fire, my heart is with the many residents who lost so much. The pain and loss remain real and are a heavy burden each day for those still rebuilding their lives. Over the past year, I have witnessed incredible resilience. Neighbors have lifted each other up, volunteers have given their time and hearts and local continue to help families recover.
Gorell: Zero Bail policy is a risky proposition for our community and California
In recent years, the criminal justice system in California has undergone significant changes, and one of the most concerning is the trend toward Zero Bail. While this policy may be hailed by some as a step towards fairness and justice, it has unintended consequences that should be deeply concerning for Ventura County residents. In Los Angeles County, the Superior Court has opted to embrace the policy of $0 Bail.
Gorell: Borderline victims' autopsy reports not appropriate to publish
A California Court of Appeal affirmed the trial court and denied a suit by family members of Borderline Bar Shooting victims. The families were attempting to block release of autopsy reports of their loved ones who were killed on Nov. 7, 2018. County counsel has advised that, as a result of the court action, the county of Ventura is now required under the California Public Records Act to release the autopsy reports to the media.
