Boulder County: Protect yourself and others when going outdoors
By Joe Pelle, Eric Lane, Jeff Zayach and Jeff Maxwell We understand these are stressful times and getting outdoors for exercise and fresh air is a great aid to helping us all get through these trying times. Research has shown that when people are stressed, anxious, and socially isolated — as we are right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic — having access to parks, trails, and natural areas becomes even more important.

Opinion: Jeff Zayach: The community needs every single person to do their part
By Jeff Zayach Please go out in the fresh air (at least 6 feet away from others); take a step back, close your eyes, and take a deep breath! For most of us, what we’re experiencing today with the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented in our lifetimes. It is not to be taken lightly; many people will become ill, some will even die. It has changed our lives; it’s disrupted our routines, activities and our ability to freely move about and do what we want to do.
Opinion: Jeff Zayach: Syringe litter is unacceptable, but halting harm reduction program won’t help
By Jeff Zayach Like the rest of the nation, the Boulder County community has been impacted by the opioid epidemic, which has led to a significant increase in the number of people who inject substances. Nationwide, there has been a 60% increase in heroin use (114% increase among white people). The number of participants accessing the county’s syringe access program has increased 12-fold since 2010.
Jeff Zayach: Sugary drink tax surplus should stay in Boulder, not go to industry
More revenue has come in from the local tax on sugar-sweetened drinks than was anticipated. It's not because we're all suddenly drinking more soda; it's because consumption rates were underestimated in the planning phase. So this fall, due to requirements of TABOR, Boulder voters are likely to have a choice on the ballot — direct the surplus funds already collected to programs that can improve the health of our residents, or refund it to beverage industry distributors.
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper adopting clean car emission standards will improve health and save money
Thank you to Governor Hickenlooper for recently committing Colorado to consider adopting Low Emission Vehicle standards. This was a critical step to protecting the health of Coloradans and the economy of our state against the harms of the proposed federal rollback of auto emissions standards. Ozone pollution, a component of smog that damages lung tissue and can worsen asthma, has long been a problem in the Denver metro area.
Zayach: Advanced car standards good for health of people, economy
Ozone pollution has long been a problem in the Denver metro area. Today, the problem has spread to the entire North Front Range, exposing 90 percent of Colorado's population to unhealthy ozone pollution. In fact, in 2017, Denver was ranked the 11th most-polluted city in the nation for ozone levels. We know that vehicle emissions are one of the largest contributors to ozone formation.
