Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Sadly don't remember, but it was something for my high school. First job as a full-time reporter was on a free service of my local library.

How is social media changing news?

Dramatically; information travels faster and it's easier for misinformation to spread. That's why it's best to check every source you can.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Doing what you can to report on current and past events as accurately as possible.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Just tell me the who, what, when, where, and why and that should cover it.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft Word, GoogleDocs, WordPress, and Newscycle.

What's your favorite social network?

Uhhh, I guess YouTube. Too many good videos on there to not pick it. Also kind of made me who I am today, so that helps.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Newtown High School's student-run newspaper, The Hawkeye, from freshman to senior year. I was also a managing editor in my senior year.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A few! The "NASA ‘Discover Exoplanets’ Exhibit," "Resident Turns 102," and "Musicians Perform At Arctic Audio Showcase" articles are my favs.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write, write, write. Any skill is like a muscle. The harder you work towards it, the more you develop your strength!

When's the best time to pitch you?

Definitely midday.

What's your favorite drink?

Water is the best (but boring) answer, so I'll say chamomile tea :)

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Reading, drawing, listening to music, or watching tv. Maybe you'll catch me outside if you're lucky.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

All of them tbh. It's the best way to learn what's happening; by seeing how different sources cover the same thing. Lame cop-out I know haha
