“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is an evolution for the series, bringing in a wonderful sense of realism and emotional maturity. This is more the Spider-Man we know from previous iterations, and Tom Holland does an excellent job of showing us that nuance. Though the movie doesn’t avoid some of the classic MCU pitfalls — it keeps distracting itself with potential tie-ins — there’s a lot here to like.

Andrew Scott would probably be fascinating reading the phone book. I do know he’s incredibly watchable predicting the weather, which many would say is almost as boring. Proof of that can be found in “Pressure,” the World War II movie adapted from the stage play of the same name. Though the script provides minimal backstory for his character, and has no interest in making him likable, Scott is deeply nuanced and engaging the entire movie.

When a filmmaker does something dramatic like adapting “The Odyssey,” you expect them to have a really specific reason they wanted to do it. Christopher Nolan finally tells us his reason in the last half hour of his nearly three-hour long adaptation, but none of the characterization that came before actually supports it.
