In 1978, William Watson Purkey developed a self-concept approach to teaching in which he suggested that teachers focus on being intentionally inviting with students. He and John Novak continued to refine the model through the years (Purkey & Novak, 1984; Purkey & Novak, 1996; Purkey & Novak, 2008). In 2020, they recommended the “Teacher Stance” for creating an inviting environment (Purkey et al., 2020).
