West Nile virus detected in Calgary mosquitoes earlier than usual this year

Researchers at the University of Calgary say there are mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus in the city, and they’re urging people to take precautions. At the same time, Primary Care Alberta confirms one travel-related case of West Nile virus has been reported in the province so far this year.

Alberta's booming mosquito populations are triggering more than just itchiness and aggravation. It turns out the pesky swarms are leading to some emergency room visits in Alberta, particularly among children. Edmonton emergency room physician Dr. Andrew Dixon has treated a number of cases of so-called “skeeter syndrome” this summer.
