Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Sports intern. It was tough and I wasn't very good at it. But I'm happy I stuck with it.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. And I worked at Blockbuster. So that makes me... very old.

How is social media changing news?

Social media continues to evolve how we consume news. It's a double-edged sword.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent?

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It's a tough, unforgiving business, but worth it in the end.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I don't recall one.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I prefer personal pitches that are aimed at my audience: 30-50 year olds who enjoy spending money on travel. My days of hostels are over.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Pen. Paper. Eggs. Milk. Onion. Bread. Wait, that's my shopping list.

What's your favorite social network?

I really enjoy Instagram. Reels and Stories are fun to create and a challenge to master.

Who do you wish followed you?

You. Yes, you. Also, not you.

Why did you become a journalist?

I've always loved writing. Took me a few side trips to circle back to it, but I love what I do.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope. Didn't even know we had one until after I graduated.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

All of them!

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write every day. Even on days you don't feel like it. That's the only way you get better.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Mornings. Right after I drink my coffee you can get anything you want from me because I'm at peace.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

No single one stands out. The best pitches are personal and to the point.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Pitches that are clearly just emailed out to a list with no personalization at all.

What's your favorite drink?

Coffee.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Don't ever tell Google that I'm not at the computer. It doesn't like it when I get sunshine.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Nat Geo. Always fascinating stories to read and share.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

People think travel writing is one giant vacation. It has its perks, but it's a tough industry for sure.
