Jerome Socolovsky’s Biography

I cover religion for the Voice of America in Washington, D.C.

I am also a familiar voice to U.S. audiences having reported for National Public Radio from Madrid from 2002 to 2010. In Spain, I covered a wide range of topics including the legacy of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship, and the 2004 bombing of commuter trains in Madrid.

Previously, I was an Associated Press reporter based in Madrid, Amsterdam and the Middle East. I covered the international trials in The Hague and the Lockerbie proceedings and also reported from war zones in Bosnia and Yemen.

I lived abroad for a total of 20 years and speak Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Hebrew as well as some German, French and Arabic.

I went into journalism after studying engineering (of course!) at the University of Pennsylvania (class of 86). I have a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and one in religious studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
