This darter has fished through more than 20 seasons, each scar is a memory and there are still more to be made. Twelve-plus years is a good run for a plastic plug, but it won’t quit and neither will I! I’m not sure what year it was, but at some point in the ‘twenty-teens’ I remember there being a craze surrounding this new color from Beachmaster that was dubbed ‘gasoline’ by the plug loving public.

An evening big blow and an approaching storm has brought rough water and stripers to this location. These conditions along with low light can turn on the summer striper fishing. Midsummer surfcasting doesn’t have to be a grind. Summertime often ushers in the doldrums for surf fishermen. The air and water are warm, and that usually results in poor fishing close to shore. Additionally, any stripers that are around are fussy, and that’s if you can find them.

By far my favorite summer activity, when it comes to fishing, is hitting the early morning surf in the hunt for a limit of fluke. Growing up without a boat, I learned to work with what was provided, and luckily even to this day, I can walk to my local beaches and some of my trusty spots still yield a fruitful harvest of flatties.
