The first Spring Crew Party at the Golden Gate Yacht Club since COVID was an outstanding success. How do we measure success? By how it succeeds at the mission we’ve had since we first started holding crew parties in the early 80s — connecting boat owners with prospective crew. Another measure is, does everyone have a good time.

Our on the schooner Mayan inspired Jerry Newton to write in about the America’s Schooner Cup: On April 5, 2025, 12 schooners are expected to start the 37th running of the America’s Schooner Cup Charity Regatta on San Diego Bay. They will represent some of yachting’s most famous designers and the determination of dedicated owners who have kept them afloat as a living snapshot of the West Coast’s sailing heritage.
Reader's View: Concerns persist over preserving Lyric Center
I took exception to the remark made by Paul Gregersen about Mary McReynolds engaging in “a pattern of counterproductive behavior” in the Jan. 17 article, “ Virginia's Lyric Center at 'crossroads,' hopes to sustain momentum .” As reported, McReynolds and her husband were vital from the beginning in establishing the Lyric as a beacon of arts and culture on the Iron Range.
Stages of the Range to present These Shining Lives in September
The play These Shining Lives written by Melanie Marnich will be presented in two venues by the Stages of the Range Players in September. The play is based on the true story of four women who worked for the Radium Dial Company— a watch factory based in Ottawa, Illinois. It showcases the danger women faced in this workplace and highlights the wider lack of concern companies had for protecting the health of their employees.
Auditions to be held November 7, 8 and 9
VIRGINIA – Stages of the Range Players (SRP), a new theater group, has been started to provide Iron Range communities with a variety of theater productions. The group was created by a number of long-time actors, directors and producers of stage experience. For their first show SRP will perform a New Year’s Eve dinner theater on December 30 and 31 in Virginia. The show is “Surviving the Spotlight” written locally by Greg Monk.
Column: Back to work for the 2020 legislative session
Sen. Jerry Newton The 2020 Legislative Session began on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and the Capitol is once again full as we get back to work. We have a lot to do before our adjournment on May 18, and we do not have time to waste. I wanted to give you a brief preview of what we can expect this year, as well as my priorities for the upcoming session. The major focus for this year is on passing a capital investment bill, more commonly called a bonding bill.
Reader's View: Franken wrongly swept up by #MeToo
I wouldn't presume to speak for the entire Iron Range, and the writer of the Oct. 29 letter, “Range doesn't want to hear from Franken,” wasn’t speaking for me, my wife, and others I've spoken to when it comes to former Sen. Al Franken. It's my belief Franken was swept up in the #MeToo movement, which was a very legitimate, overdue cause that rid us of some unsavory men in power who took advantage of their positions. I don't believe Franken was one of them.
Column: It’s halftime at the 2019 Legislature
Sen. Jerry Newton We are now entering the third month of the 2019 Legislative Session, and as the first committee deadline approaches things will really begin to move quickly as we work to create a budget. A budget funding essential programs and services over the next two years is the most critical work my colleagues and I will do this year. On Feb.
OPINION EXCHANGE | Providing care for veterans is essential. How and where are critical questions.
Minnesota has five state veterans’ homes housing 850 residents, located in Silver Bay, Fergus Falls, Luverne, Hastings and Minneapolis. In the last legislative session, $32 million was set aside to meet the state’s required portion of a building request for three additional 72-bed veterans’ homes in Montevideo, Preston and Bemidji. The Veterans Administration (VA) would be responsible for the remaining two-thirds of the construction costs.
Reader's View: Different comics appeal to different readers
"Prince Valiant" and "Rex Morgan M.D." aren't meant to be gut laughs; they are continuing story lines that many people must enjoy, as they have been published for years. Personally, I like stories that have a historical backdrop, so I enjoy "Prince Valiant," and there are parts of it that can make me laugh. The News Tribune has done surveys in the past and reacted to what the majority would like. "Doonesbury" is my all-time favorite and was moved online.
Column: We need more than metal detectors for school safety
It is my pleasure to welcome all K-12 students in the Anoka-Hennepin, Spring Lake Park and Centennial public school districts back to the classroom. Back-to-school season is a fresh opportunity to set new goals, make new friends and celebrate new academic and extracurricular achievements.
Phil Oren, Fit System founder, explains how he revolutionized bootfitting
Before Phil Oren revolutionized bootfitting, he was a shoe salesman in a retail shop at a time when it was standard practice to X-ray kids’ feet to see if their shoes fit. He spent more than two decades as a sales rep for The North Face and, later, Mountain Hardwear, but it took a bad bootfitting of his own before he realized the process was all wrong.
