Go slow | BayBuzz
[As published in July/August 2026 BayBuzz magazine.] Shines brighter than a Himalayan salt lamp, hums sweeter than a singing bowl, turns out my new vacuum is the best meditation mechanism my house has ever seen. It’s a Duoflex HX1 Cat & Dog Grab-n-go Stick Vacuum in Obsidian Black with a HEPA filter…bagless, cordless with a powerful 25.2V DC digital efficiency motor that utilises vortex technology. I’ve been bragging about it since I bought it.
The Sound of Music hits all the right notes
I have seen The Sound of Music a dozen different ways. I’ve watched it on the telly as a kid at Christmas, as a teenager on VHS feeling soppy and sentimental, in my 20s laughing at it not with it (but secretly still loving every minute). I saw it in my early thirties as a sing-along version hosted by a drag queen wearing a curtain (complete with curtain rod and rings). In my forties I took my kids to the live show and left at the interval (because it is fairly long for a five-year-old).
How to read a novel
We should start a book club. Cancel all other co-curricular activities and take up reading. Everyone’s doing it. Oprah has a book club. Luce Blakiston (Young NZer of the Year) has a book club. Reese Witherspoon and RuPaul both have book clubs. There’s one in Havelock that’s so prestigious and popular someone will have to die before a spot opens up. My aunt in Gizzy is part of one that subscribes to the Book Discussion Scheme, which is older than me and services over a thousand NZ book clubs.
