The victory allowed the Mustangs to remain unbeaten on the year (1-0-5) through six matches, the third longest unbeaten streak to open a season in program history. I’ve always loved this small little town that sits along the northern part of Lake Michigan.

But today is my last day at the Courier-Journal. After nearly 10 years here at 6th and Broadway, I’m saying goodbye to more than 15 years as a professional journalist. This is what I have wanted to do since I was 15 years old. I spent my years in high school writing and going to journalism camps.

Had a great swim this morning at Mary T. with Coach Mike. This was one of those days when I actually felt like I knew how to swim. Funny thing is that sometimes that feeling lasts for 100 meters, then goes away and then comes back again. My 400 meter continuous swim seemed a little slow, in part because we were turn before the wall to practice open water turns. That’s a weird thing to do in the middle of a lap lane. But it was good. Did some fast fin swim and some pull buoy laps too.

May not be the Olympics, but I finished that Olympic

Finishing an Olympic distance triathlon seems like something you should do before doing a half ironman, but not me. When I tried to do an Olympic for training in Detroit in June, I failed miserably at the choppy swim and had to get pulled out. Going on to complete the 24-mile bike and 10K run didn’t make that complete since I didn’t get in the full 1500 yard swim. But I still went on to Muncie and completed the 70.3 in July.

It’s been pretty nice to have an easier training week following the 70.3. I know, I know, I still went to TRX on Monday and swam on Tuesday. And I have run a mile every day since the race. (I’m at 416 days now.) But that seems like taking it easy to me. I’m not scheduling two workouts a day or going crazy with the running — my pace has been super slow. But it has really helped me to move those sore post-race muscles. Still, I always feel like I need to have a goal.

People keep asking me how I feel after Saturday’s race … surprisingly good actually. I’m having some hip and glute soreness in my muscles, but overall the muscle pain wasn’t too bad. I think it’s worse because I have to sit a lot at work so when I stand up I’m tight again. But the worst of the race aftermath was definitely the sunburn and the blisters. It’s funny how as an athlete, you find yourself talking about things that would generally not be part of your everyday conversation.

Suburban fire departments curtailing medical runs to save money, standardize response

But you gotta appreciate a hockey game that ends with two goals in just a few seconds with only a little over a minute left in the game.

I’m in a bike safety frame of mind this week. After writing about helmets yesterday, I saw this link from Bicycling magazine today. It’s all about how to avoid some common hazards on the road, like gravel and parallel cracks — both of which can take a rider out if not carefully maneuvered. As I was reading it, I was thinking about how if I tried to “skip” over a pothole I might just take myself out and some people with me because I’m not sure I’d be so graceful at it.

Busy weekend of training

This was another busy weekend of training for me. I’ve mentioned before that I’m motivated by fear of my upcoming 70.3 in Muncie, which is just now five weeks away!! I was scheduled to do an hour and a half on the bike, but decided to go for a longer ride Saturday since I hadn’t been on my bike all week really. I wanted to try to hit about 40 miles so I headed downtown for the Louisville Bicycle Club ride from the Waterfront to Shawnee to Iroquois. It was a beautiful day to ride.

In just five weeks from tomorrow I’m scheduled to take on my first half ironman distance race at the Muncie 70.3. I’m starting to freak out a bit. Five weeks isn’t a lot of time. I’ve been pretty steadily training, don’t get me wrong. But wow, just five weeks until a race I signed up for months ago. It’s not like I’m out of shape. I’ve been training. I’ve been running. I’ve been swimming. And I’ve been biking. But now I’m starting to worry that I’m not doing enough.

One of the awesome things about this town is how many people like to run! And with walks/runs almost every weekend throughout the spring, summer and fall, there is no excuse not to get out there and do some running in a group. I like races, usually, because there are so many people out there and it gives me something to look at and think about while I’m running. It’s like the most awesome combination of two things I love: running and people watching. I don’t generally like 5K races.
