7 September 2026 When a government scheme helping those in fuel poverty ended, Bridget was left with a brand new heating system that was difficult to use and with little support on how to use it. Bridget* received help through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, which supported people experiencing fuel poverty to receive energy efficiency improvements to their homes.
How building community resilience to climate change benefits us all
1 September 2026 CSE has been working with Bristol Climate and Nature Partnership and local organisations to strengthen community approaches to extreme weather events. Community organisations are often at the heart of communities – they understand local challenges and offer a wide range of advice and support to many.
Introducing a brand new, free support service for community-led energy projects
13 May 2026 Community Energy GO helps local groups – in areas with low community energy activity – make their community energy projects a reality. Building community energy projects can be difficult – especially in the early stages, when the path forward is unclear and specialist advice is hard to find. Community Energy GO (CEGO) is a new national support service that provides free, expert support at exactly that moment, helping groups in England get their projects properly established and moving.
Hear from the people we’ve supported through home visits
Our Home Visit Advanced project provided in-depth support for people that needed it most and met them where they were – at home. By visiting people’s homes, our advisors were able to more fully assess their situations, through looking for issues such as damp and mould or draughts, and ensuring their heating was being used effectively. This gave our advisors important information to provide the best possible advice.
Connecting young people with community energy initiatives
15 April 2026 Young people are the most enthusiastic about community energy but the least likely to be involved. Your support will give more young people the opportunities they deserve. This Earth Day, Wednesday 22 April, CSE and Community Energy England (CEE) are fundraising to ensure more young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, have the opportunity to take action on climate and energy issues in their local areas. The enthusiasm is already there.

5 December 2025 When Ali’s health declined, life became much harder. His home, where he was trying to recover, was full of damp and mould. When Ali’s* health took a turn for the worse, the place that should have been his refuge — his home — became a source of struggle. Without enough money to keep the heating on, the cold crept in and damp and mould spread through his flat, exacerbating his illness. Nobody deserves to come home to a freezing, damp home.

5 November 2025 Like so many families this winter, Vincent was doing his best to keep his children safe and warm – but the damp and mould in his small flat made that almost impossible. Vincent* had just installed a smart meter, hoping to save money. Instead, he discovered something alarming – his small two-bed flat was costing more to heat than homes twice its size and his family were still cold.

How capacity building transforms grassroots energy advice
17 September 2025 Funding and capacity building programmes are vital to bolster local support for people in vulnerable circumstances. Grassroots organisations can transform energy advice delivery in underserved communities, but they need more than just funding to succeed. While funding is incredibly valuable, it can sometimes miss a trick, especially if the funding is for a new way of working, which will often require training for staff and volunteers.
Tailoring messages to increase local interest in solar panels
20 August 2025 People have different motivations for installing renewable energy. We tested to see if bespoke messaging increased interest in solar panels. Through our work with communities, we understand that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to tackling climate change. There are lots of reasons why someone is interested in the transition to net zero, and tailoring messages to align with people’s beliefs can be a successful way to create positive support for local climate plans.

20 May 2025 For Coco, Bright Green Future (BGF) offered a refreshing focus on environmental issues often overlooked in traditional education. Usually at school the focus isn’t on the environment, but here at Bright Green Future everything is about the environment, sustainable energy and just transitions. It was really interesting, especially at today’s graduation, talking with all the professionals and being inspired about all the opportunities available to me.
Chew Stoke Village Hall's story
14 April 2025 The Chew Stoke community was struggling to cover their village hall’s energy costs. With limited income, keeping the space open was a challenge. But a community building energy survey from CSE has given them valuable insights and hope for the future. Community buildings have a vital role to play in the transition to net zero. But many face barriers that make it difficult to make positive changes.
Historic buildings embrace climate action
17 March 2025 How heritage buildings can be part of the net zero movement while preserving their character. A significant proportion of UK buildings are over a century old, presenting both a challenge and an opportunity in our race to net zero. But far from being obstacles to climate action, these historic buildings are emerging as vital assets in reducing carbon emissions.

A Hedonic Sensory Trial: Exploring the Relationship Between Sweet‐Liker Status, Demographics, and Health Measures on Acceptability in a Beverage System
These findings highlight how consumers' predisposition for sweetness can influence food behaviors and, consequently, their overall health. In contrast to the dichotomous no sugar and full sugar beverage varieties, this study supports a paradigm that moves away from this approach—focusing instead on a gradual reduction in sugar content to improve health.

For Hdayet, Bright Green Future (BGF) provided a unique opportunity to connect with others who share his passion for the environment. Where I’m from, I don’t find many people that share the same passion for the environment. So joining BGF and finding a lot of people who are passionate about the same things was really beneficial to me. BGF equipped Hdayet with valuable skills that he’s already putting to use in his new role as a young trustee for a charity in Camden.

Advice for making older and traditional homes energy efficient
A community event highlighted common problems in older and listed buildings as attendees share stories and get valuable guidance. In Clevedon, we recently ran a not-yet-green open home event where local homeowners open their homes for their neighbours to explore. Traditionally, these events show off homes that have had energy efficiency upgrades for attendees to gain inspiration. ‘Not yet green’ homes highlight common challenges homeowners might face when improving older and traditional homes.

Especially as more homeowners seek to make their homes energy efficient, and demand for skilled tradespeople goes up. The Wiltshire Retrofit Directory is here to help.
Lack of translation services leaves energy consumers out in the cold
Understanding the complexities of energy services becomes an uphill battle when language barriers stand in the way. Alarmingly, most energy suppliers fail to offer translation services, leaving countless customers struggling to effectively communicate their needs, highlight problems with their energy supply or understand what tariffs they sign up for. CSE feels that a failure to do so by ten of the largest suppliers represents a failure to meet the guidelines set out by the regulator.
Your donation has double the impact this April
16 April 2025 Donate to our Green Match Fund campaign to support CSE’s work with communities and people-led climate action. For one week, every pound you donate will be doubled. The Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) is participating in the Big Give’s Green Match Fund (GMF) to raise money for our work supporting communities to take climate action. The climate emergency is an urgent, global problem that can feel overwhelming and too complex to solve alone.
Debate on the embodied carbon of retrofit
22 February 2024 While home improvements can make homes operate at net zero, it takes a lot of energy to make those necessary changes. Our energy system is changing rapidly. With the continued plummeting costs of renewable energy, the national grid predicts that grid electricity will be zero, or very nearly zero carbon by 2035. This has interesting implications for how we should think about retrofit.
How consumer archetypes shape the energy landscape
CSE Project Officer, Elliott, shares why we need to understand consumer capabilities to design a greener, smarter and fairer energy system that will support our transition to net zero. The benefits, cost and impact of our future energy system must be shared across society fairly. Otherwise, people will not buy into the transformation that’s needed.
Prepare your home for extreme cold weather
28 November 2024 Understand how extreme cold weather can impact your home, what issues you should be aware of, and what to do if you’re left without electricity or water. As the temperature plummets this winter, your home might be exposed to snow and frost. Extreme cold weather can significantly impact the structural integrity, efficiency, and overall well-being of your house, as well as your ability to keep warm. Extreme weather can also cause you to lose water supply or electricity.

The fast-changing narrative around renewable energy
21 September 2023 How might we harness conversations around renewable energy to boost deployment? Dan Stone, Lead Planner for Net Zero at CSE, explores the shifting narrative around renewables … The narrative and public mood around renewable energy has been changing so rapidly it’s hard to keep up. Until only quite recently, renewables like onshore wind or solar farms were portrayed in the press as being unreliable white elephants, entirely dependent on subsidies.
