The Discipline of Joy
The secret of joy for believers lies in the fine art of Christian thinking. It is by this means that the Holy Spirit, over and above his occasional visitations in special moments of joy, regularly sustains in us the joy that marks us out as Christ’s. Our Lord Jesus wants our joy to be full. Certainly he has made abundant provision for our joy. And if we focus our minds on the facts from which joy flows, springs of joy will well up in our hearts every day of our lives.
6 Categories of the Cross
Whatever the world sees when it looks at the cross, that is what the eye of faith sees. Christ sloughed off the forces of evil, triumphing over them on the cross. There’s the thought of victory. Categories of the Cross Jesus Christ is, in fact, an expression of the temper of the whole New Testament. For explaining the cross, the New Testament uses many images, many categories, many modes of thought blended together.

Behold the Man: Meditations on Jesus Christ, His Death, and Resurrection
The hinge of human history is a man—the man, Jesus Christ. Suspended between heaven and earth, the God-man took hold of the cosmos and turned the world upside down with his death and resurrection. But why? Who is this man, and why did he have to die? Why was his tomb empty on the third day, and what do these things mean—both then and now? In April, we plan to “behold the man”—as we explore the weight of Christ’s perfect life, vicarious death, and glorious resurrection.
Why We Need the Puritans
by | May 19, 2022 | Featured, The Gospel and the Christian Life Who the Puritans Really Were Horse racing is said to be the sport of kings. The sport of slinging mud has, however, a wider following. Pillorying the Puritans, in particular, has long been a popular pastime both sides of the Atlantic, and most people’s image of Puritanism still has on it much disfiguring dirt that needs to be scraped off. “Puritan” as a name was, in fact, mud from the start.
The father of the Reformation
Today is Reformation Day, marking the 503rd anniversary of Martin Luther’s nailing of his 95 Theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg, Germany, jumpstarting the Protestant Reformation. In July, we lost another great Protestant theologian, J.I. Packer. But praise God his decades of work remain with us. In the mid-1960s, Packer participated in the annual Puritan and Reformed Studies Conferences in London and submitted the following paper on the life and influence of Luther.
Why Christians Depend on Revelation from God
The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.—Exodus 32:16 Revelation-Dependent Christianity is the true worship and service of the true God, humankind’s Creator and Redeemer. It is a religion that rests on revelation: nobody would know the truth about God, or be able to relate to him in a personal way, had not God first acted to make himself known.
Christians Must Be Truthful
Then they said, “We will restore these and require nothing from them. We will do as you say.” And I called the priests and made them swear to do as they had promised. I also shook out the fold of my garment and said, “So may God shake out every man from his house and from his labor who does not keep this promise. So may he be shaken out and emptied.” And all the assembly said “Amen” and praised the Lord.
All Sins Are Not Equal
This question leads into what for many evangelicals has become uncharted territory. We think of conversion as the moment when the guilt of all our sinspast, present, and futureis washed away by the atoning blood of Christ. As sinners justified by faith and heirs of promised glory, we rejoice in salvation and think no more about our continued shortcomings and how God might "weigh" them. If asked, we explain our attitude as true evangelical assurance. But is it?
