As shown in Fig. 1, from 2003 to 2021, the total number of physicians in Mainland China increased from 1.87 million to 4.29 million, with an annual average growth rate of 4.72%. The number of urban physicians increased from 1.22 million to 2.48 million, while rural physician numbers increased from 650,000 to 1.81 million. Physician density per thousand population increased from 1.54 in 2003 to 3.04 in 2021.
