Pictured are the 12 visionary women who founded the Club of The Twelve, a reading club, in 1898 in Lexington. More than a century later, their legacy lives on with the club’s records now entrusted to UNC-Chapel Hill’s Southern Historical Collection. A small group of forward-thinking Lexington women gathered in October 1898 with a simple idea — to read, to learn and to discuss the world around them.
