A former Philadelphia police officer was convicted of perjury on Tuesday after a jury found that he lied under oath about where he recovered a gun during a traffic stop. Daniel Levitt, 52, was found guilty by jurors who rejected his account that he had discovered a handgun protruding from a backpack in plain view during a 2021 stop in Northwest Philadelphia.

A former Philadelphia correctional officer has been charged with aggravated assault after prosecutors say he beat a restrained incarcerated man last year inside one of the city’s jails. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office announced the case against Ernest Blair, 34, on Friday, a day after a judge held the charges against him for trial.

Philadelphia struck a deal with a new healthcare provider for the city’s jails, replacing a longtime contractor that went bankrupt earlier this month and left medical staff unpaid for weeks. A federal bankruptcy judge in Florida last weekgranted the city’s request to terminate its contract with YesCare five weeks early and transfer local medical staff to the payroll of CFG Health, court records show.
