Dr Jim Walker: British racing’s ‘sick man of Europe’ danger
In early July, online headlines featured a story titled ‘Germany to ban sick leave’. Of course, the reality was less sensational. Chancellor Friedrich Merz had announced that self-certified sick leave was to be banned and that only applications for leave accompanied by a doctor’s note would be granted in future. This did not come as a surprise to me.
Dr Jim Walker: All bets are off unless Commission pulls back
There is an old proverb that sums up well the British government and Gambling Commission’s approach to problem betting: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions”. Campaigners, especially from groups that disapprove of gambling altogether, have long argued that the public – especially those that bet on horseracing – must be saved from themselves. They advocate affordability checks to ensure that vulnerable people are not frittering away the household budget every week.
Dr Jim Walker: It costs nothing to look – unless you’re an owner
It is 11am. The phone rings and it is a call from the yard. An entry has been identified for your pride and joy and then come the fateful words, “Just to take a look”. I wish those words were preceded by the proviso, “It will cost you fifty quid in BHA fees regardless of whether we run or not”, but that is never the case. Possibly trainers just assume that we know that every entry has a significant cost that is borne solely by the owner.
Dr Jim Walker: Fixture cull plan puts cart before the horse
Last month, I wrote about the need to rethink where prize-money is being directed in our sport. Too much is concentrated at the top end and not enough is trickling down to owners and horses in the bottom ranks. We all know how training costs have exploded in the last few years as well as BHA fees, jockey fees and other expenses. That affects smaller owners much more than those in tier one with ten-plus horses in training. As a result, these owners, especially individuals, are exiting the sport.
Dr Jim Walker: Industry cannot ignore its biggest investor
As this is my first Leader as new Chair of the ROA, I want to highlight the huge investment that owners make to racing. This is the time of year that the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is looking at its 2026 budget and deciding on next year’s fees.
