It all began innocently enough. A friend photographed a small hive-like substance in our local nature preserve. The spongy mass was weird-looking and about the size of a marshmallow. He figured it would make a nice “Monday Mystery” for my Facebook page. We both recognized the strange glob for what it was — a mantis egg case. You know praying mantises — they’re those awesome grasshopper-like insects that look like miniaturized monsters from an old horror movie. But what do they have to do with birds?

What was this mysterious pigeon doing at State Line Lookout? Original

Bird-watching can take you down unexpected paths. Last month, I saw a pigeon perched on a wall atop the cliffs at State Line Lookout in Alpine. That surprised me for two reasons. A. The pigeon had a band on each leg. B. The pigeon was still alive. You don’t often see pigeons chilling on the Hudson River Palisades. The cliffs are home to peregrine falcons, one of the world’s fiercest birds, and pigeons are their favorite entree. The leg bands likely meant it was a homing pigeon, aka racing pigeon.
