These starling-size birds are a beautiful iridescent indigo, they’re people-friendly, and they eat mosquitoes, beetles, and other bugs. For folks in our neck of the woods, there’s just one problem. Over the years, the largest of North America’s swallow species has never taken to nesting here. Thanks to efforts by the Bergen County Audubon Society and Bergen County Parks, that’s changing.

I’d arrived at the local nature preserve early, spurred by reports of avian wonders of all sorts moving through North Jersey: prothonotary warblers, Cape May warblers, hooded warblers, gray-cheeked thrushes, and flycatchers galore. My binoculars at the ready, I inched along the main path.
