Transformation‐based gene silencing and functional characterization of an ISC effector reveal how a powdery mildew fungus disturbs salicylic acid biosynthesis and immune response in the plant
1 INTRODUCTION Pathogenic microorganisms such as fungi, oomycetes and bacteria secrete a series of effector proteins into host plant tissues, interfering with the plant immune system to achieve successful infection (Pelgrom et al., 2020; Robin et al., 2018). Powdery mildew fungi are obligate biotrophic parasites that infect many economically important plant species.
