1 BACKGROUND Prevalence of alcohol abuse reported among persons with psychosis is consistently higher than that of the general population, with rates ranging from 20% to 50% (Archie & Gyömörey, 2009; Barrowclough, Eisner, Bucci, Emsley, & Wykes, 2014; Compton, Whicker, & Hochman, 2007; Ouellet‐Plamondon, Abdel‐Baki, Salvat, & Potvin, 2017).

This study examines the prevalence and correlates of binge drinking and its association with expectancies of alcohol use, within a sample of patients with first‐episode psychosis enrolled in the Early Psychosis Intervention Programme (EPIP) in Singapore's Institute of Mental Health. A total of 280 patients from the EPIP were recruited for an on‐going longitudinal study examining cigarette smoking and alcohol habits.
