INTRODUCTION Ebenaceae (Ericales) consists of four genera: Diospyros, Euclea, Royena and Lissocarpa (Wallnöfer, 2004; APG IV, 2016). The majority of species of this pantropical family are in Asia and the Indo-Pacific region (Hiern, 1873; Wallnöfer, 2001; Duangjai, 2006). Diospyros L.

Global biodiversity is facing serious threats, with almost one million plants and animals (~25% of all known species) under the threat of extinction (Brondízio et al. 2019), and there is a need to conserve the remaining biodiversity of this planet. Global biodiversity is unevenly distributed, with hotspots that require special focus and darkspots that need to be explored (Brooks et al. 2006).
