When Brian Depauw and his girlfriend Jolien De Buyser packed their bags for New Zealand, it felt like the beginning of a great adventure, chasing new experiences on the other side of the world. What they couldn’t have imagined was how quickly that dream would shatter because of the Whakaari/ White Island tragedy. Six years on from the deadly eruption, happiness has blossomed after heartbreak, with the lovebirds recently tying the knot in their romantic home city of Bruges, Belgium.
Colorado Needs the Right Behavioral Health Workforce
The conversation around Colorado’s behavioral health workforce often centers on numbers: how many therapists we have, how many we’re losing, and how many we still need. The projections are stark. In 2026, Colorado is expected to face a shortage of more than 4,400 behavioral health professionals, according to the Colorado Rural Health Center. But what communities are telling us — and what we see every day in neighborhoods across Denver — is that the issue runs deeper than numbers alone.
Rowing legend Eric Murray on love and life with partner Thea
If you’d told rowing legend Eric Murray five years ago that turning up late to a mutual friend’s tweed-themed party would lead him straight to the love of his life, the double Olympic champion wouldn’t have believed you. But when he spotted a smiling Thea Lyle dressed as a farmer in a tweed cap and gumboots, something instantly clicked. “I’d been speaking at a Chiefs rugby event, so I arrived at the party fashionably late,” remembers Eric, 43.

Wales wants tourist tax to create ‘favourable conditions’ for Welsh language to thrive
It’s been a long time coming, but Wales is shaping up to become the first country in the UK to introduce a nationwide tourist tax. Details released yesterday (Monday) indicate that the levy will add £1.25 (€1.50) per night to the price of accommodation in Wales, or £0.75 (€0.90) for visitors staying on campsites and in hostels. The tax won’t be universally applied across Wales. Rather, different regional councils will decide for themselves whether to introduce the levy in their area.
Chiefs star Emoni’s healing journey
Making the All Blacks is the stuff of dreams for countless young rugby players, so it was a pinch-me moment for Chiefs speedster and family man Emoni Narawa when he found himself training with the squad in Paris as they prepared for last year’s Rugby World Cup. The flying winger, 24, had already scored a try in his test debut against Argentina and was excited to be part of the All Blacks’ latest bid for the prized Webb Ellis Cup.

We need to talk about Paul
Here's why I don't think Paul Eagle is a good candidate for Mayor Paul Eagle's 7 years on the council were defined by trying & failing to stop a cycleway being built With the campaign now in full swing there's really only three serious contenders for Wellington Mayor: newcomer Tory Whanau the current Mayor Andy Foster, and former councillor and current Rongotai MP Paul Eagle Tory Whanau is the only fresh-face there but looks qualified to do the role and has a very progressive set of policies.

Summer is time for visiting
It is good to see so many visitors to our beautiful Chequamegon Bay. The sparkling waters are so welcoming. We chatted with Mayor Gordy Ringberg and learned that in addition to the Abbey Road, Bayfield will soon have a new tall ship. If you are interested, contact him. The shops are humming. The visitors are coming. As you already read, I had a wondrous time with my dear friend Tara simply “pottsing” about like two teenagers.
Week brings celebrations, old friends
Saturday, we decided to drive to Lake Vermilion near Ely, Minnesota to view some land near the shore. This is Mike’s memory lane, as he spent many days in a cabin that his father built on that lake. It is peaceful and holds special memories. This was heavily wooded land, so our hiking boots provided the necessary secure footing. Our trek through the woods produced surprises in the form of fresh blueberries and raspberries. We also stopped at our favorite Life of Riley Resort.
Off into the World You Go
Do you recall planning and packing for a “big trip”? There are details and dreams combined. It is tantalizing to predict what you will experience. One can dream about the adventure after attending to the many details. What will the Northern Lights look like in Iceland? Will we get to share stories with relatives in Sweden? I wish you all such a wonderful experience and will share ours with you upon return.
‘Now that the gardens are fully watered’
Some days I forget to water our gardens. Nature took care of that task last weekend, and I will not have to worry for quite a while. It is sweet to view the droplets on fresh blooms after a storm. We only hope the damage to our area was minimal in terms of roads and trees. Such is summer.Activities are blossoming as well. This is our Tourist Time, and we locals enjoy the rewards. The Apostle Island Cruise Line is offering free rides for locals on Saturday, June 23. There are no reservations this year.
A novice begins to blossom
My art experience has previously been limited to watercolor classes with Doug Thomas. There I produced pieces I never thought I could do. He was a great and encouraging teacher. So, I decided I would tackle Jane Herrick's three-day Fiber Art Class. What an amazing experience! There were about a dozen of us in attendance at her lovely studio overlooking the lake near Herbster. The others had an art background. Many had taken her workshops before.
Graduation (not cake decorating) is a joy
This rainy Friday afternoon, I spent hours creating a Graduation Cake (gourmet, none-the-less) for our grandson, Spencer, who will attend CSU (Colorado State University) in fall as a Business Major. He has played hockey since age four and received a scholarship there. He reports to us that “every sport is available there” (Great for a young athletic man). We will give him rollerblades for graduation. What a joy it is to watch your grandchildren mature into young adults.
Remembering our lost friends
Life is blossoming. New plants and trees are appearing to bring us joy. The recent rain brought new life and beauty. At the same time, we lost a few who brought joy to our lives. John Kramolis was a true trooper. I recall him singing in the choir, even when he had to breathe with extra oxygen attached. Gene Brevold was a loyal member of our Bayfield Lions Club even when it was difficult for him to hear at our meetings.
Enjoying the Birding and Nature Fest
Well, we finally planted our flowers, veggies, and gardens. We even planted two apple trees! I guess we were all a bit anxious after such unpredictable weather. Now that the Birding Festival is over, I personally wish for rain. Who else will water all those plants? We attended Fiorio’s Spring Fling at Tetzner’s Greenhouse and bought a few more! It is always so sweet to have Glenn Walker provide the background music with his sweet harp.
A meaningful Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day was a meaningful event. I returned Saturday to find a box of Racine Kringles from my daughter. I know how our friends love receiving Kringle from our hometown in Racine where all the Danish bakeries abide. Then the most gorgeous hanging basket arrived. At first, I thought it was blooming roses, as it was so lush. It is overflowing with begonias!Of course, this inspired me to begin our garden planting. I imagine many of you did the same once we saw the sun.
Sweet journeys, my Joplin
Five years ago my sweet husband spotted a used car for me. You may remember my writing that my reaction when I saw the 2005 Cadillac Coupe De Ville, I exclaimed, “I am so not a Cadillac woman!” Well, after owning that dream car, I am permanently spoiled. The ride is smooth and the handy features make one feel like they have a servant in the car. However, we just bought a Kia Sorento and still have our old Tahoe (which we plan on selling).
Two weeks of catching up to do
First I must explain that our Internet was down for two days, and this column could not be submitted. The owners of Morty's Pub later told me they could not function well without reading that! So here is a combination of two weeks. When spring finally arrives, it brings one’s promises of “cleaning out the barn” and creating a new garden. I am always grateful that we experience each season with new joy and opportunities. Despite the mud, we can observe small green sprouts beginning to grow.
Our ever-changing world
It is early Sunday morning and we are all anxious to see what the weather brings. I just received two calls: first, our church service was cancelled. Second, the Chequamegon Choir concert is postponed until tomorrow night (Monday). I surely hope folks attend. Friday night in Ashland brought a good crowd, and we women actually conquered the song, “Happy” (finally).Mike and I made major purchases recently. I bought a Bluetooth microphone to further clarify speech input (beyond my hearing aids).
Surprised by several inches of white stuff
I awoke this morning (Saturday), a bit stiff from planting bushes and then flowers along the lakeside slope at our cottage and thought I was back in Wisconsin. Everything is white here, about two inches worth. Did we bring this from Bayfield? More importantly: Will my new plants survive? It is what it is! Mike is outside with boots and winter jacket, completing the steps to the lake. This has been a busy week, states Gramma Jo. Tommy had several baseball games.
The bunny hops in the south
We had a delightful afternoon in the sun yesterday as we watched our grandson pitch a victory baseball game (9-2). What more can proud grandparents ask? Now at 7a.m., as I write, Mommy and Daddy just headed for the Bahamas, and I have the boys to myself. They are sleeping as I hide Easter eggs. This time we drove straight through to the cottage, 16 hours and arrived at midnight. It is always special to step into our cozy spot and reacquaint ourselves with the lake.
Gorgeous eggs greet the coming of Easter
Ruth Anne Teisburg had barely joined our AquaFit class when she offered to teach the class as a substitute. Then she asked if anyone would like to learn how to dye Ukrainian Eggs for Easter. Talented lady. So, eight of us gathered at our house last Friday afternoon to enjoy the intricate process. We each brought six raw eggs that had sat on the counter overnight and a tapered candle. We lit our candles, which provided the wax to be drawn on the eggs.
Learning Peace and Respect from Another Culture
At the end of our bed and across the room sits a small shelf table I once built to hold my spiritual library. Above that on the wall is a framed saying from a Cherokee Prayer — “O’ Great Spirit, help me always to speak the truth quietly, to listen with an open mind when others speak, and to remember the peace that may be found in silence.” It has forever helped me to remember. Last Thursday evening, we attended a Pot Luck discussion at Bad River.
Back in beautiful Bayfield
Travel is exciting, but there is nothing as special as the serenity when we drive down our road toward the lake, treated to a soft and glorious sunrise. The weather was perfect for my small plane flight to Chicago O'Hare. One goes from Ironwood to Terminal 3 in Chicago. And who should be on the flight but Jeremy Oswald, flying to see high school friends. We agreed that this flight is a good deal only if the weather cooperates.
Kindness and loss
In preparation for my presentation for Fox Valley Hearing Loss Association next week, I came across the following quote from Mark Twain: “Kindness is the language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” Yes, reaching out via kindness and compassion is a language that all can understand. Our world certainly needs this now.We felt that when we attended the Unitarian Circle chat focusing on prison ministry. Courtney is a volunteer at our prisons and shared her insights with us.
Cavorting in California
Yes, I missed the column last week. We stayed with an amazing 93-year-old friend in Berkeley. She did not have a computer, and we had decided to shed ours to save carry-on space. I did think of you readers though. How you would love the Berkeley campus! We spent the day there, visiting their bell tower (campanile) to view the city below, and discovering the reassembled bones of a T-Rex in their life sciences building. In between we partook of the endless good food in that area.
The great outdoors
Last night I dreamed of snow and sunshine. We had spent the morning at the bar stool races in Drummond. What crazy fun! Many entrants created clever tops to their bar stools. Some were a bit hard to ride, causing rider collapse, but it was all in good fun. We wrapped ourselves in snow pants and scarves and cheered for the racers.I then picked up my friend, Wendy Young to celebrate her birthday. She wanted to see “Peter Rabbit” so off we went.
A week for lovers and loving friends
This is a special week, the week of Valentine’s Day. Did you celebrate either in a dinner-out mode or just reaching out to friends and family? Given this world today, we can all benefit from adding a touch of love to our lives. Cards went out to grandkids, and some were received from friends. I hope yours was special in some way.I must open with apologies to my new friend, Patra Holter, whose name I royally misspelled in the last column.
From blood moon to lover’s day
Did any of you get to see the blood moon or lunar eclipse? We saw it via the amazing photography of Bob Jauch. Thank you, Bob and Facebook. And now you can make your plans for Valentine’s Day! You can take your partner to NGLVC and snowshoe, then go to dinner at the Co-op on Feb. 9 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. where together you can create an Italian dinner from scratch. In Bayfield, if you hurry to reserve, you can go to the CORE lunch on the 9th.
