Michigan stands alone - and not in a good way. We are the only state in the country without a statewide septic code. Just 12 of 83 Michigan counties require inspections of aging septic systems. What does that mean? More than likely, you (and me) are living downstream from a body of water contaminated with human waste. While Ingham County requires inspections before a home is sold, nearby Eaton County repealed a similar program back in 2018 - and our waterways don’t adhere to manmade boundaries.

Abstract Vesicle-associated viruses, or viral vesicles, are groups of virions packaged within or bound to the surface of small membrane sacs released from host cells. This structure has recently been identified as a common form of certain viral pathogens in host bodies and excreta and is known to enhance viral infectivity, virulence and persistence, raising health concerns if discharged into aquatic environments.

Coupled chemical–microbial deterioration in stagnant fire hydrant branches threatens drinking water quality - Nature Water

Abstract Fire hydrants are widely installed in drinking water distribution systems, where stagnant water forms multiple ‘high-risk zones’. The stagnant water quality at hydrant terminals has been poorly studied. Here we show that stagnant water exhibited an 18-fold increase in manganese, a 40-fold increase in total cell counts, a 13-fold increase in adenosine triphosphate and enrichment of opportunistic pathogens compared with flowing water.
