Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Intern at NBC Sports Bay Area

Have you ever used a typewriter?

What's that?

How is social media changing news?

There is less critical thinking. People see what they want to see passively through a short post instead of actively for longer periods.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means to share what matters in ways that matter.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Some Cal fans call me #WojQuin, blending my name with that of former NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski -- humbly humoring!

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I'm always down for a phone call.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I use Voice Memos on my iPhone to conduct interviews, and it usually offers a helpful transcription.

What's your favorite social network?

Vine

Who do you wish followed you?

I think it would be pretty funny if Kawhi Leonard used social media simply to keep up with me.

Why did you become a journalist?

As a senior in high school, my AP Literature teacher, Mr. Cammarata, said I did good on a mock exam one day; it's been a blur since.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Breaking the news on Cal hiring Tosh Lupoi for Berkeley's school paper was pretty dope; I was eating Oakland's Smokin Woods BBQ at the time.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Follow your vision. And only write what you can defend.

When's the best time to pitch you?

On a day that ends in y.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Being asked to interview Aaron Judge on a late night in Oakland after class for a story on the A's relocation was pretty cool.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Haven't come across it yet ...

What's your favorite drink?

I can always down a chocolate shake or a Diet Coke over ice. But I'm a big water guy, first and foremost.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

With my family, La Burrita or the YMCA

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The papers local to me, like the San Francisco Chronicle and the Los Angeles Times.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Most assume sports and society are two different spheres, when, in reality, sports recapitulate society -- shout out Dr. Harry Edwards.
