WE ARE THE HARPS Paperback – 13 May 2024
When the final whistle was blown in the game between Bray Wanderers and Finn Harps on Friday 20th October 2023, it brought to an end Finn Harps Football Club’s 2002nd competitive game in senior football and also drew the curtain on the club’s 55th season in the League of Ireland. Over those fifty-five seasons, 628 players have donned the shirt and played for the club.
Cold weather, cooler vibes
For music lovers who can find the time amid obligations to loved ones, this season’s smaller-than-usual live slate packs plenty of punch. And artistic depth. Here’s a look at two shows worth squeezing in. The Sadies Saturday, 12/2 Iron Works When Sadies’ leader Dallas Good died last year, the entire Canadian rock scene felt the blow. But Good’s death hit hardest at home. Brother and bandmate Travis was tasked with picking up the emotional and professional pieces. Namely, where to go from here?

James Lombard Dead at 88
James Lombard, a dedicated contributor to New York's Irish community in multiple ways and many levels over many years, has died at the age of 88. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Rosemary in May, 2017. Back in 2008, with still many years of community work ahead of him, James was honored by the Irish Echo in the Best of the Bronx Awards. His profile at the time read: "James A. Lombard a native Bronxite, is a first generation Irish American of Mayo and Cork lineage.
Ogbene gets first PL goal
Republic of Ireland striker Chiedozie Ogbene got his first-ever English Premier League goal on Saturday when he scored for Luton Town as they came from being 2-0 down to draw 2-2 away to Nottingham Forest. The Hatters were trailing 2-0 until the 83rd minute when Forest failed to deal with a routine free-kick and Ogbene fired home the loose ball. Adebayo got Luton’s equalizer two minutes into stoppage time. Ogbene was born in Nigeria, but the family moved to Cork when he was 8 years old.

Mary and Steve Were Champions of Justice
I entered the New York Metropolitan Correctional Center on June 18, 1983 pursuant to a British extradition warrant for political offenses committed here in the occupied six counties. I thought in those early hours that it would be a matter of days before I would be in chains and handed over to the British and sent back to a Belfast prison. A correctional officer on 9 South told me I had a visit from some lawyers. Sitting in the legal room was the firm of Somerstein & Pike.
Autumn reigns
Fortunately for Buffalonians, October brings both elite weather and, if the stars align, elite live music. Across the board, premium indoor venues—from the clubs to KeyBank Center—showcase an impressive lineup covering every music need. The biggest of these acts—Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks—headlines KeyBank Center October 4. Impressively, Nicks resonates as much today as when Mac exploded on the rock scene almost forty years ago.
The summer music season is here
For music lovers, Buffalo summers are king. Rainy Mays give way to sunbaked Junes, and outdoor venues open their doors. This weather shift does more than lift people’s spirits; it also fills a void in the region’s music menu. (check out our music listings and outdoor concerts listings for detailed listings) To be sure, midsize shows—too small for KeyBank Center, too big for Town Ballroom—often pass over Buffalo in favor of larger adjacent markets: Toronto, Cleveland, Pittsburgh.
Divine inspiration: My Morning Jacket
In 2019, alt-rock powerhouse My Morning Jacket almost called it quits. The moment involved no emotional fireworks, no explosive green room drama. In fact, there was no moment at all. Just a band fatigued from two decades of heavy touring who felt their vibe had become stale. At the time, drummer Patrick Hallahan likened it to an ailing marriage. If you’re with the same person for twenty years, he says, “some of them aren’t going to be so hot.” In short, the group needed a break.
May it last
In 2013, the Avett Brothers’ star was rising. The band—a four-piece Americana outfit from North Carolina—had just finished recording The Carpenter with legendary producer Rick Rubin. They booked The Tonight Show, headlined summer festivals, and consistently filled amphitheaters across the United States and Western Europe. It was a big year. At least I thought so, when I interviewed Seth Avett (guitar, vocals) ahead of his band’s Artpark gig that May.
Rethinking Our Farming Approaches: The Sustainable Way
By Joe Doherty of Atkins To feed a growing global population, farmers have adopted a manner of agricultural techniques to drive away pests and increase crop production. While these might be effective at increasing yields, they’re not sustainable. An increasing dependency on monoculture increases the risk of crop failure. Meanwhile, the reckless use of toxic pesticides has major implications for human health, not to mention the wider ecosystem.
Canadian acts lead a great spring lineup
This time of year, we’re often itching to map out our summer concert schedules, but while you wait on those fun announcements, don’t sleep on the great club shows happening right now. Dwayne Gretzky Saturday, April 8 Town Ballroom (681 S. Main Street) $20 Easter weekend, Toronto tribute juggernaut Dwayne Gretzky makes a welcome trip across the border to the Town Ballroom.
Buffalo’s rock range includes Third Eye Blind and the Wood Brothers
March 3 Wood Brothers Town Ballroom March 29 Third Eye Blind University at Buffalo’s Center for the Arts From classic rock to roots, pop-country to jam bands, Buffalo’s March rock calendar has got you covered. The slate is a potent mix of star power and spunk. KeyBank Center hosts a trio of legendary headliners: jukebox stalwart Journey (3/16), blue-collar troubadour emeritus Bruce Springsteen (3/23), and country royalty Blake Shelton (3/25).
Indie rock or alchemy?
Kurt Vile & The Violators Oct 25, 2022 in Asbury Hall The forty-two-year-old Kurt Vile’s most recent album, (watch my moves), fits neatly alongside his previous eight; it’s a collection of uncharacterizable tunes that tilt, bend, and groove beneath Vile’s deep outlaw country voice. The resulting sound can be frustrating to describe—a smooth blend of lean drum machine loops, Beatles Revolver-era sonic feedback, and plucky guitars.
Roycroft Campus opens art center
Roycroft Campus celebrated the opening of the new Castiglia Art Center, located in the historic Print Shop. The Center provides open studio space for artists to create and exhibit artwork, gather, and conduct classes. Affordable membership and day pass options make this new community resource accessible for all. The project’s benefactor, Barbara Castiglia, invested $100,000 and has committed to supporting operating costs for the first six years in hopes that the Center will then be self-sustaining.
Pressing forward: moe.
These days, Al Schnier has good reason to be contemplative. His band, moe., a premier American jam-band that rose out of the University at Buffalo, is approaching its thirtieth year on the road. But that’s not what gives him pause. The past five years have been some of the most challenging of Schnier’s career. In 2017, moe. bassist Rob Derhak was diagnosed with throat cancer, forcing a hiatus after decades of relentless touring.
Merced River, Yosemite Valley, CA, USA
Assignments are brought to you by mpb.com Picture Story Snow in Yosemite is always a treat, and capturing it with fall colors is special. But first we needed to get there, and that meant crossing Tioga Pass before the road closed for the season. So we arrived about 36 hours before the storm, and spent a full day enjoying fall in Yosemite. It was our first time there at this time of year. We usually go to the Eastern Sierra or Colorado, but in 2020 we opted to stay closer to home.
When Is a Shopping Cart Personal Property?
In 2019, Santa Barbara city workers retrieved 20 shopping carts throughout the city, which increased to 538 in 2020, a reflection of the worsening crisis of homelessness in Santa Barbara County. In response, the City Council recently adopted and approved the passage of a Shopping Cart Ordinance, which went into effect on March 16, 2021.
Housing First to End Homelessness
“Go anywhere, except back into the park,” the police announced at 9 a.m. to homeless residents of an encampment at Pershing Park on March 12. It was a cold gloomy morning, when the “clean-up” began. Police officers and sanitation workers ordered the homeless campers to take their tents and belongings and leave their encampment. The city previously posted signs, warning the campers to clear out within 72 hours.

Q&A with Tommy Lombardo
Co-owner of Ristorante Lombardo and The Little Club By Joe Doherty Photo by kc kratt The co-owner of Ristorante Lombardo recently opened what has become one of the hottest tickets in town: The Little Club, located across Hertel Avenue from the Ristorante, focuses on wine and a limited menu of select meats, cheese, and seafood. Buffalo isn’t really a wine town, is it? Those parameters are starting to break down. People are well-traveled and have better access to information.

iDate: Romance in the age of apps
"If I tell you that you have a gorgeous body, would you hold it against me?" Until the advent of the iPhone, a line like this was one of the few tools guys like me had in our arsenal. How remarkable that our species hasn't reached extinction. Anyway, in the age of mobile apps, lame pickup lines are completely unnecessary. It's the 21st century, folks, and iDating is all the rage. If you don't have a Valentine's Day date lined up, or have just been too busy to plan ahead.
Remember who you are
Many years ago when my kids were young I came home to find them hitting my brand new Titleist golf balls off the driveway with my golf clubs. For those of you who are not golfers, I will tell you that for golfers this is a cause for weeping and the gnashing of teeth. I was furious and inconsolable. I went into a tirade yelling at my kids as I searched to account for my formerly unblemished golf balls.
Tom Hayden played right
Twenty-nine years ago I photographed people at play for a series in my portfolio. I wanted to shoot Tom Hayden, who I knew as the right fielder on a team in the men’s baseball league I played in. He agreed to pose for me at a batting cage in mid-town, and we made some good images. I gave him a print, and figured that was the end of our business. The next year I was looking for a new team, and called him to get his manager’s number. And that’s how I joined the Hollywood Stars in 1988.
Calvin O. Stevens, 73
Mr. Stevens was born in Sterling, the son of the late Cecil and Edna (Buel) Stevens. Mr. Stevens was a resident of Oswego County for most of his life. He retired from Alcan in 1999 after many years of service. Mr. Stevens served in the United States Army from 1961 until 1964. He was a former commander of the Hannibal American Legion and a member of the Oswego American Legion. Mr. Stevens was predeceased by his wife, Shirley L.
The force is back!
I want to be clear that I’m not a “Star Wars” fanatic. I’ve never attended a movie in full dress costume, nor do I still own “Star Wars” action figures and light sabers, though I did once covet my best friends model replica of the Millennial Falcon. But I must admit, I am a fan. The first episode of “Star Wars” came out when I was 12 years old and I, like most of my friends, was hooked from the start. Today, as pastor, it is hard not to see parallels between “Star Wars” and religion.

Mixing Housing Tenures: Is it Good for Social Well-being?
Mixing tenures is now a widely accepted policy designed to tackle problems of social exclusion in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. However, the evidence base for mixing tenures is fragmented and ambiguous. With few exceptions, studies of mixed-tenure effects have been small, one-off investigations of individual communities, providing only a rudimentary basis for comparative evaluation.
Indexes and Fragmentation in SQL Server 2000 Part 1 – SQLServerCentral
I believe it's my academic background that has seen me develop the need to see the facts for myself before I feel confident about a particular subject. It has always been both a strength and a weakness of mine. On one hand it provides the motivation for me to tackle a subject I want to understand, but on the other I have been guilty of reinventing the wheel just so I can see it work for myself.
Deploying Scripts To Multiple Instances – SQLServerCentral
These days most of us work in an environment where more than one SQL Server instance exists. And sometimes we're required to perform the same task on each of these servers - whether it be an update to a stored procedure or running your maintenance jobs - it can be quite tedious manually carrying out the same thing over and over again. This kind of work also introduces the potential of human error due to the repetition, boredom, time restrictions, stress, etc.
Controlling Jobs – SQLServerCentral
Have more control over your jobs Ever thought about scheduling a job to run within a particular timeframe? For example, you want to run your index maintenance tasks overnight but you don't want the job running over into the timeframe when your morning backups start. I had an issue recently where I needed to run a huge indexing task against my databases.
