I grew up assuming American democracy was solid and would always be there. Lately, I’m not as sure, and that makes me uneasy. When people say “authoritarian,” I hear: more power piling up at the top, less respect for limits, and less room for disagreement. It doesn’t have to look like old‑style dictatorships. It can creep in while the basic labels — elections, parties, flags — stay the same.

A SMARTIAN PERSPECTIVE Doris Kearns Goodwin is one of my favorite biographers. A significant portion of her book, Leadership in Turbulent Times, is dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt’s role in settling the 1902 Pennsylvania Coal Strike. The miners went on strike in May of that year with three objectives: shortening the 10-hour workday, increasing their wages, and getting the coal companies to formally recognize the United Mine Workers.

A SMARTIAN PERSPECTIVE I recently read an article written by Karl Rove in the Wall Street Journal entitled “America is Often a Nation Divided.”  In it, he correctly reminds us that social discord and political divisiveness in the United States is nothing new. He goes on to express optimism that our country is resilient and will survive the current political chaos as it has in crises past.
