Donald Trump clinched the United States election after a tumultuous campaign as Canadians officials espoused the important relationship between neighbours in congratulations to the former president on his extraordinary comeback. “I will govern by a simple motto: promises made, promises kept,” Trump said to cheering party faithful at a Florida watch party. Trump was elected the 47th president of the U.S. amidst a deeply divided America by prevailing among voters in the key battleground states.

Magnitude 4.0 earthquake felt across Greater Victoria

A 4.0 earthquake was felt across Greater Victoria just after 4:00am this morning. The earthquake struck in Haro Strait just west of San Juan Island. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit at a depth of 52 kilometres. CHEK News was contacted by several people saying they felt the quake. One person writing, “my bed shooke with what I think could have only been an earthquake!” There are also reports of people feeling shaking as far north as Duncan and in Vancouver, BC.

Debris and falling rock closes Highway 4 in both directions

Posted: Dec. 25, 2023 9:04PM The province has closed Highway 4 along Cameron Lake in both directions Monday night due to debris and falling rock. The closure is between Cathedral Grove/MacMillan Provincial Park and Koen Road. According to DriveBC a geotechnical assesment is underway. A detour route is not available. The closure was announced just after 6:00pm and the next update is expected Tuesday morning at 10:00am.
