Going nowhere fast? Personal trainers on why you aren’t seeing results in the gym
You’re in a boom and bust cycle We’ve all done it. Launched ourselves head first into a new regime – perhaps as the result of a new year resolution, recent breakup or aggressively unflattering photo. “You go all in and train five days a week,” says Elizabeth Davies, personal trainer and author of Training for Your Old Lady Body. “Then life happens. You miss a few sessions, then stop completely. You feel deflated that you couldn’t stick to it.

From man boobs to baldness: everything you wanted to know about midlife wellness … but were too male to ask
Men’s metabolism also tends to slow during midlife. Miller says this isn’t down to ageing itself, but the loss of muscle that tends to accompany it – so dieting isn’t the answer. “Restricting calories – particularly if it comes at the expense of protein – simply accelerates muscle loss, which further slows metabolism, creating exactly the cycle men are trying to escape,” he says. A better approach is to focus on increasing protein intake, alongside strength training in the gym.
Governor declares statewide drought emergency
Gov. Jared Polis declared a statewide drought emergency and activated Phase 3 of Colorado’s Drought Response Plan Thursday, June 4, “in response to worsening drought conditions driven by record-low snowpack and prolonged warm temperatures across Colorado.” The Colorado Drought Task Force and the Water Conditions Monitoring Committee recommended the actions “after months of monitoring water and worsening drought conditions statewide,” according to a statement from the Governor’s Office.
How to protect your home from wildfire
With historically dry conditions raising the threat of wildfire in the Upper Arkansas Valley, homeowners can take action to protect their homes. The first step is to make a phone call to schedule a home assessment for wildfire risk. Homeowners in southern Chaffee County can call the South Arkansas Fire Protection District at 719-539-2212. In northern Chaffee County, call the Chaffee County Fire Protection District at 719-395-6545. Both fire protection districts offer home assessments at no charge.
Right hair, right now: top stylists on the products they use themselves - and ones to avoid
Colourist based in California who specialises in silver hair. His clients include Jane Fonda and Andie MacDowell Which bargain product do you swear by? I swear by a microfibre towel, or even a soft cotton T-shirt, to dry your hair. Most people don’t realise how much damage a regular bath towel can do, especially to silver or chemically treated hair. This one small change can really reduce frizz and breakage. Another inexpensive must-have is a wide-tooth comb, to use in the shower.
‘I have a daily battle with myself not to go on Ozempic’: Jade Thirlwall on anorexia, protest in pop and life after Little Mix
Joe Stone Sat, August 16, 2025 at 5:00 a.m. UTC 20 min read It’s customary for former girlband members to shun their manufactured roots the second they go solo. But now that Jade Thirlwall is no longer a member of Little Mix, she’s become their biggest fan. “I look back and I’m gagged at us!” she tells me, eyes wide with delight. “I still watch our music videos or performances and wonder how we weren’t even bigger, because we were fucking amazing.

A moment that changed me: I resolved to reduce my screen time - and it was a big mistake
Not a phone in sight … Joe Stone with friends in Margate.Photograph: Courtesy of Joe Stone I unlocked my iPhone screen at the precise moment that my weekly screen time notification appeared – accidentally dismissing it before I could take a screenshot – and promptly erupted into a rage.
Where to start with: Elizabeth Strout
Elizabeth Strout. Photograph: Greta Rybus American author Elizabeth Strout has captured millions of readers’ imaginations with her small-town stories of ordinary people with rich inner lives. Her novels – often set in Maine, where she grew up – have won her a Pulitzer and got her shortlisted for the Booker and, this year, the Women’s prize for fiction. Joe Stone gives us a tour of her interconnected oeuvre.
The new rules of gym etiquette: don’t film yourself, never mansplain - and keep your top on
If hell is other people, then its ninth circle must be Other People At The Gym. Where else can one experience the full gamut of human depravity – from farting on the treadmill to taking conference calls on the cross trainer? And that’s before we get to “gymtimidation.” A recent survey found that one in four people feel self-conscious at the gym, while 28% worry about using the equipment incorrectly (and, God forbid, suffering the ultimate indignity of starring in a viral “gym fail” video).

Sunscreen and snail slime: what skincare experts do – and don’t do – to their skin
Looking after your skin used to seem so simple: for decades, a basic "cleanse, tone, moisturise" routine was seen as the gold standard. But the skincare industry has recently exploded with thousands of new products, while skincare influencers have been racking up millions of views with often bewildering (and conflicting) advice. So, should you be putting snail slime or beef tallow on your face, like that video you saw on TikTok? And which products are safe for your teenager to use, if any?

From tiny shorts to inexplicable chinos: what your gymwear says about you
Photograph: David Newby/The Guardian To give you an idea of the grandeur of my local gym, it recently erected a sign bearing the legend: “Shoes must be worn. SLIPPERS ARE NOT SHOES”. Suffice to say, its patrons remain untroubled by wider conversations about the etiquette of workout clothes, both inside and outside the gym.
‘Men now want their bum to look good in jeans’: how male butts got bootylicious
‘For most men, it’s about achieving balance as opposed to looking like Nicki Minaj or Kim Kardashian.’Photograph: Justin Metz/Getty Images Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. In a nation divided by politics, culture wars and the appropriate way to eat a scone, it seems that there is one thing we can all agree on: we like big butts and we cannot lie. In this (and every) regard, Kim Kardashian has a lot to answer for.
‘An experiment in ritual humiliation’: would a month of rejection therapy make me fearless?
My heart is hammering, my head is humming with tension and there’s a real possibility I may vomit. No, I haven’t been set up on a blind date with Piers Morgan. Instead, I’m about to approach a stranger in a packed King’s Cross station and ask to borrow £100. I choose a middle-aged man with a kind face and a red scarf, and quietly make my request so as not to be overheard by commuters grabbing their lunch.

Slapp Happy – Sort of Slapp Happy’s 1972 debut album is a curious thing. It was recorded at Faust’s Wümme studios, with the krautrock legends acting as backing band, but it sounds absolutely nothing like krautrock. It was intended as a joke – a sarcastic response to experimental musician Anthony Moore’s record label demanding something more commercial – but carries no audible trace of the smug condescension that implies. Instead, it exists in an unplaceable space of its own creation.

From the Archives: Rescue of the sub Deep Quest off San Diego in '69 had a happy ending
Unlike the recent search and rescue operation for the missing OceanGate submersible near the Titanic wreckage, a successful submarine rescue happened here nearly 54 years ago. In October of 1969 the a propeller on the research submarine Deep Quest snagged a line during operations on the ocean floor five miles off Point Loma. The four men in the sub endured a 15-hour ordeal until a two-man mini-submarine was able to cut the line and free the Deep Quest.

An Ode To Grey Sweatpants Season
Grey marl jersey, is it the horniest fabric known to man? by Joe Stone | Posted1 hour ago Everyone has their favourite time of year. For many, it's summer, when drinking in the park becomes a legitimate pastime, and not just the preserve of intimidating teenagers and divorced dads. For others, winter signals the approach of Christmas, when goodwill extends to all men (apart from Piers Morgan, be reasonable).
