Award-winning author, creative writing teacher named Salt Lake City's first poet laureate
SALT LAKE CITY — An award-winning author, poet and long-time creative writing teacher has been selected as the inaugural poet laureate for Utah's capital city. The Salt Lake City Arts Council and the Mayor's Office named Joel Long to the brand-new position on Tuesday, as the city says it wants to add to its arts and culture commitments. Long, of Sugar House, has taught English and creative writing at Rowland Hall, a private pre-K-12 school, for over two decades.
The scent of geraniums Original
I've plucked spent flowers from geraniums on the front stoop, knowing new ones come when withered are gone. I smell my hands, smell Mary's geraniums, greenhouse where we went to buy them, winter plants near the workbench, basement windows, frosted dusk, summer plants in beds beneath the twilight porch. To touch them brought the taste my hands hold now.
A Thank You to the PHCC Family
While this was intended to be an article about moving forward after our unimaginable tragedy, this missive is really a thank-you letter to our PHCC brothers and sisters — our PHCC family — who have provided us continued strength and hope. As many of you know, GSM Services lost two well-respected HVAC service technicians, James Lewis and Robert Shook, who were killed during a mass shooting on the afternoon of April 7 in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

My Turn: GO Month gives us a glimpse into Gaston’s promising future
By Joel Long Saturday Nov 2, 2019 at 10:09 AM My Turn We kicked off this year’s GO Month with a street party fitting the occasion: GO FEST. There was live music, food trucks, and two local beers brewed just for us. It was a fun event. But if you look beyond the tasty treats and toe-tapping tunes, you find something else really special. A countywide community that came together to celebrate our mutual success and learn about our common path towards the future.
My Turn: Join your community in celebrating GO Month
We collect our groceries from the local farmers markets and choose birthday gifts for our loved ones at our favorite boutiques down the street from work and home. We meet our co-workers at Ole Dallas Brewery after a productive day and spend our weekends exploring the Schiele Museum with our families. Whether you were born here, just bought your first house here or have been calling Gaston County home for years, you know this county has so much to offer.
Elegy For an Open Space
A nature is about to give way to warehouses, a poet pays homage to the antelope, raptors and shorebirds whose habitat, the northwest quadrant of Salt Lake City, is scheduled for destruction On Pioneer Day, I get up early and do what I have done for many years on this Utah holiday: I drive west, away from parades and firecrackers, out of the city, toward the Great Salt Lake.
My Turn: GOtober Fest will be a true celebration for Gaston
By Joel Long Thank you, Gaston County! When we began preparing for Gaston Outside’s second year toward the end of 2016, we knew one thing was for sure: GO Month was a go.
