What was your first job as a journalist?
Getting picked up by New Orleans-based Where Y'at Magazine in early 2023. Prior to that I was publishing independently on Substack.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
No. I'm 39, not 79.
How is social media changing news?
Fast. Click-bait'y. The need to be the first to report versus getting the facts straight. Disinformation in real time. Accessibility. Etc.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
I don't consume much fiction.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Everything.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Familiarize yourself with my work, then contact me directly.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter (it will always be "Twitter" to me).
Who do you wish followed you?
No one I can think of. I don't wish to put too much of an emphasis on social media. My focus is on the quality of my work.
Why did you become a journalist?
I love writing.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, I did not. I've always operated independently until 2023.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
"To my former boss who fired me: thank you." It was an incredibly personal piece and I hope it resonates with someone in a tough spot.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Keep writing. Write every day. Find your authentic voice. Do not deviate. Pitch, pitch, and pitch again. Be relentless in your pursuit.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Whenever! I'm always working.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
None thus far, thankfully hahaha. I'm sure it's only a matter of time, but, at the moment I am still very young in my writing career.
What's your favorite drink?
That's easy, a Negroni.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Watching my favorite teams play, at a movie theatre, checking out a new restaurant or at a favorite neighborhood dive bar.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
It varies depending on the subject. I love everything sports, popular culture, travel, tech, local and world news coverage, etc.
