Parallel HIV-1 fitness landscapes shape viral dynamics in humans and macaques that develop broadly neutralizing antibodies

eLife Assessment In this important quantitative study of HIV-1 evolution in humans and rhesus macaques, selection coefficients are inferred at scale over the HIV genome. Selection coefficients are similar in humans and macaques, providing compelling evidence that these coefficients are representative of the fitness landscapes of these viruses within hosts.

Inferring fitness seascapes from evolutionary histories

Abstract Evolutionary dynamics are often conceptualized as walks on an adaptive landscape, with populations climbing toward optimal fitness peaks. However, environmental changes can transform static landscapes into dynamic "fitness seascapes" where natural selection fluctuates in time. Here, we used a path integral approach derived from statistical physics to reveal time-varying selection pressures from genetic sequence data.

This issue of Religions serves as a modest invitation to consider a big claim, namely, that if we want to address the most pressing challenges of the 21st century, interreligious collaboration is required. On the one hand, this claim simply points to the relevance of religious identities and interreligious realities in the world.
