PITTSBORO — Seaforth’s senior guard Nate Emerson and junior guard Campbell Meador spearheaded an 18-0 advantage to open the game, and the Hawks never trailed in a 78-42 win over North Moore Friday. “It all starts with defense with us,” Meador said. “On offense, we were just getting good looks. Penetrating and then kicking it out or just finishing inside.

Watson and Vijay once played like Scottie did this year.
Tom Watson is currently 75 years old. He is the youngest living member of golf’s greatest generation. He began his career at the tail end of the era of the game’s most in depth and talented generation that was led by the modern day great triumvirate of Arnold Palmer, South African Gary Player, and Jack Nicklaus alongside Julius Boros and Billy Casper.
Tour Championship this weekend
In the always confusing world of the PGA Tour schedule, the top 30 ranked professionals from the PGA Tour’s Fed Ex Cup points list are at the storied East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. It would be easy to say that this is the third of three tournaments that make up the Fed Ex Cup playoffs, but technically this is not a tournament to make money or garner points. Instead this weekend is all about the bonus monies that those top 30 pros can garner.
Improving your golf game requires a commitment
I was sitting at my table at the golf course, shuffling through bills, garnishments, payroll, and all kinds of other issues that have very little to do with running a golf course. Suddenly Scott sat down with me and wanted to catch up on all things personal and family. He was living in Kansas and we hadn’t seen each other in a number of years. I had two different perspectives about Scott over the last 40 years.
Ko arrives while Chi Chi departs
Last Saturday 27-year-old Lydia Ko of New Zealand captured the gold medal following play in the 2024 Women’s Olympic Games Golf Championships in France. For Ko it marked two milestones in her short lived career. It garnered her an Olympic gold medal while also punching her ticket into the LPGA wing of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Lydia has been on the game’s radar since she first turned professional as an ultra-gifted13 year old and yet oftentimes child prodigies can’t sustain that enormous pace.
Golf courses and airports
At one time or another in our lives we have been involved in some sort of a sporting endeavor, whether it was playing youth soccer or T-ball when we were six years old or from the other end of the spectrum when we were playing senior golf or pickle ball. Of course sometimes the sport chooses us.
Generational wealth in golf
I was a little bit startled, to say the least, when I read earlier in the week that the Green Bay Packers’ young quarterback, Jordan Love, had just inked a contract extension to the tune of $220 million over the course of the next four years. If Love should blow out his knee or his Achilles tomorrow and never be able to play again, he would still be guaranteed the tidy sum of $155 million.
Buckingham Summer Junior Golf Classic results
Bodhi Moore of Cobb made it a clean sweep of local junior tournaments on Thursday by shooting 79 to win the 31st annual Lake County Junior Golf Championship at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain. Moore struggled early in his round and turned in a front nine score of 43 following a quadruple bogey eight on the par four 3rd hole. That left Moore tied atop the leader board through the first 13 holes of competition.
Schauffele lifts the Claret Jug
Xander Schauffele of San Diego captured the 152nd edition of the Open Championship at the Royal Troon Golf Club in westernmost Scotland. As the contestants were beginning to get through the easier front nine on Sunday, there was a logjam at the top with seven golfers of note within one stroke of one another and there were 12 within two strokes.
Arnold Palmer and the majors
We find ourselves at the midpoint of the 152nd annual British Open Championship at the Royal Troon Golf Club in western Scotland. The Open is the fourth as well as the oldest of the major championships in the world of men’s professional golf. The inaugural Open Championship was initially contested in 1860 and was hosted by the Prestwick Golf Club. At that time Prestwick was just a 12 hole golf course. The contestants played three rounds of 12 holes to equal 36 hole.
British Open returns to Royal Troon
While we’re in the heart of the summer, the top notch golfers in the world are more than 80% into their season. Believe it or not, the PGA Tour has already hosted 30 events and this week the tour is divided up with the big boys playing in the Scottish Open at North Berwick while the rank and file are teeing it up in Nicholasville, Kentucky for the playing of the ISCO Championship.
Six time PGA Tour champion visits Cobb
It was just two weeks ago on a Friday that I arrived at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain slightly after 8:00am and pulled into my usual parking space in the upper lot. Upon arrival I noticed our pro shop attendant, Shawn , talking to two men and a woman. I saw that he pointed to my car. A distinguished looking man who appeared to be approximately 65 years of age started walking towards me. The man walked right up to me, had a broad smile on his face, stuck out his hand, and said, “Hello.

Rory was not alone
It was exactly two weeks ago that the 124th edition of the United States Open Golf Championship came to its dramatic conclusion with a series of missed putts by Irishman Rory McIlroy and a stunning up and down from the sand by Bryson DeChambeau. Since then the PGA Tour’s summer schedule has moved along. Last weekend world number one Scottie Scheffler beat Tom Kim in a playoff at Hartford.
DeChambeau wins memorable U.S. Open
Bryson DeChambeau of East Clovis, California, won the 124th United States Open Golf Championship last Sunday at the Number 2 Course at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. DeChambeau made a most memorable sand save from 55 yards out and then sunk the four foot putt to win the National Open by one stroke over Irishman Rory McIlroy. The story of Donald Ross
We find ourselves at the midpoint of the 124th United States Open Golf Championship at the Number 2 Course at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. For fans of the professional game, Pinehurst is one of the more different looking courses hosting a PGA Tour event. The greens are diabolical due to their humpback nature, the rough is more about sanded native areas than it is about high grasses, and it has all the looks of a golf course that was built at the turn of the century way back in 1900.
It’s U.S. Open Week
The 124th edition of the United States Open Golf Championship tees it up on Thursday at the Pinehurst Resort’s Number 2 Course in North Carolina. One of the earliest courses in American golf history, Pinehurst was designed by the venerable Donald Ross who arrived at Pinehurst in 1900 as the golf professional and expanded his horizons by designing multiple sites on the property. Today the Pinehurst Resort has 10 golf courses and all of them are identified by a number.

Good pressure: Berry’s preparation to take on expectations of “dream job” - The Chatham News + Record
While Seaforth High School was still under construction, John Berry would make a weekly 10-minute drive from his home to ride around and look at the progress. Already coaching kids aged 6-14 through his own Youth Hoops Basketball Camps in Chapel Hill, Berry saw the upcoming high school as a new opportunity. “I said to myself, ‘Man, this would be a place that I would love to go and coach down the street (and) turn into a winning program,’” Berry said.

Another entertaining season of ‘Full Swing’
Although my grand-daughters (ages 4 and 2) like to watch age appropriate movies on NetFlix, I find that I spend very little time on that streaming service.

Nancy, Annika, and now Nelly
The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) hosted their first major championship of the season last weekend with the playing of the Chevron Championship at the Woodlands in Texas. While the Chevron might be a bit of a head scratcher to casual fans of the LPGA Tour, this variation of the year’s first major used to be held in Palm Desert and used to go by the name of the ANI Inspiration Dinah Shore.
Scheffler takes home second green jacket
Scottie Scheffler won the 88th edition of the Masters Golf Tournament this past Sunday by four strokes over a top notch leader board of past major champions, Ryder Cup heroes, a pair of Cal-Berkeley golfers, and perhaps the next great one. Scheffler won his second Masters in three years and put himself in the record books as the fourth youngest linkster to win a second green jacket standing alongside the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Seve Ballesterios.

Past Masters greats
Time flies. It was some five years ago that Tiger Woods took home his fifth green jacket at the 2019 Masters golf tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. It was a totally unexpected moment for the great striped one as he hadn’t won a major championship of any sort in the previous 11 years. It would be the fifth time that Woods had won the Masters and the 15th time that he had captured a major championship.
Wotherspoon prevails in Match Play

It’s time for the Masters
The dogwoods, the magnolias, and the azaleas are now in full bloom in South Carolina. That can only mean that it’s time for the 88th edition of the Masters golf tournament. The best golfers in the world tee it up in just 11 days to determine who gets to don the green jacket on Sunday evening as well as cement their place in golf’s history books.
Middletown golfers prevail once again

The world’s most famous mediocre golfer
The PGA Tour is basically a week-in and week-out proposition with 48 tournaments held throughout the year. Based on the time of the year and the amount of sunlight, anywhere from 120-156 golfers tee it up weekly in a PGA Tour tournament. Sometimes there are two tournaments during the week as in the case of the British Open in mid-July while the Barracuda Championship is being contested in Truckee at the same time.

Longevity and the iron master
Every professional athlete has to have multiple dimensions to his or her game to succeed at the highest levels. For instance, the center fielder has to have a great glove, speed and range, a strong arm, hit for average and power, and run the bases. A shooting guard in basketball has to have a silky smooth jumper, attack the basket, pass effectively, play strong defense, and run the court. We could say more of the same for other major sports.
Middletown prevails on Cobb Mountain
COBB— The Middletown High School golf team started its 2024 campaign by romping to victory in the inaugural 2024 Coastal Mountain Conference tournament at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain this past Thursday. The impact of Arnold Palmer
The PGA Tour is teeing it up this week at the Bay Hill Club in Orlando for the playing of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The Arnold Palmer is one of just five invitational tournaments on tour meaning that they have some degree of freedom regarding who gets into their field. The API is also one of those high priced Signature Series events with a $20 million purse and a $4 million payday to the champion.
A tale of two rounds of golf
The day dawned and it was a beautiful day for golf. It can get pretty cold this time of the year in our northern-most climates, but in idyllic locales such as Palm Beach Gardens or Vidanta Vallarta, the courses are in great shape and the temperatures are perfect for golf. Regardless of the ambiance, it wasn’t necessarily a picture-perfect day on the links for Jake and for Charlie. They had seen better days and yet the one at hand was going to be nothing short of a massive struggle.
San Francisco City Amateur tees it up this weekend
I played a lot of amateur golf in my formative years long before the initial days of the Lake County Amateur Golf Circuit in 1994. As a kid I used to tee it up in the Chicago Amateur, a colorful event first contested at Jackson Park Golf Course in 1904.
