New exhibition celebrates the glory days of Newport's indoor markets
'Market Days Newport’, at the Cwtsh Gallery in Stow Hill at the Handpost is a mixed-media exhibition conceived as a tribute to Newport's markets before either their radical transformation (Indoor Market) into a multi purpose hub with traders and a food court, or disappearance as a working facility (Cattle Market), with its Grade II listed structure restored as a museum piece at the edge of the ASDA car park in Pillgwenlly.
Walking the Valleys
Over the past two centuries the South Wales Valleys have gone from idyllic rural landscape to the engine room of the British Empire to post industrial decline. Building on the success of their book Walking Cardiff, Peter Finch and John Briggs explore how the Valleys have changed, and how they are evolving for the twenty-first centuries in their new book Walking the Valleys.
Vote 'yes' on North Bend Measures 6-176 and 6-177
I am voting YES on North Bend Measure 6-176 to amend the City Charter. I do not like the idea that the city council has the authority to create a revenue generating mechanism such as the Public Safety Fee without asking the voters if they want to pay such a fee. The council has an unlimited ability to take such actions because there is no prohibition in the City Charter. We have already seen the unlimited power of the council with the increase of the Public Safety Fee after we, the voters, said no.
Toyota Prius was a hybrid trendsetter 15 years ago. Now what?
The Toyota Prius has already secured a spot as an icon of automotive history and one of the most influential products of this century. It’s also far surpassed Toyota’s initial expectations. Sales of the Prius peaked in 2007, however, and Toyota seems to be conflicted about its strategy for the Prius and its technology ever since.
Dr. John’s Corner: How to have a healthy baby
A recent case study showed a 22-year-old man who passed out just going up stairs revealed an undiagnosed condition of Tetralogy of Fallot. This is a condition where the development of the heart muscle is perverted. This condition is the most common cyanotic heart dis-ease and accounts for 10% of all congenital heart disease. The reason for this newsletter is to equip mothers to-be on how to improve your chances on having the healthiest baby possible.
Dr. John’s Corner: Premenstrual relief
With and estimated 80% of menstruating women experiencing some degree of premenstrual discomfort and 30% having clinically significant symptoms it’s appropriate a discussion of how to rein in these symptoms be covered here. The cause of PMS can be multi factual and not all conditions will respond the same. The areas under scrutiny are hormonal, neuronal, and dietary imbalances. In many cases, dietary alteration corrects the other two areas.
DR. JOHN'S Corner: How dangerous is your blood pressure?
When looking at meta-analysis of those on blood pressure medication against those not on blood pressure medication, the studies found no measurable difference as far as protection against stroke, congestive heart failure, or mortality. In actuality, in several categories, patients did slightly worse on the drugs as opposed to using placebos. Treatments for high blood pressure has been one of the greatest conspiracies directed toward getting patients on drugs for the rest of their lives.
Dr. John’s Corner: New Year - new life
Every January first we have the opportunity to make the coming year better than the last. This involves making decisions of diet, exercise, and how we chose to use the year we have before us. Each of us get the same 24 hours a day for the 365 days of the new year. Many of us make resolutions to change areas of our life which we’ve not been satisfied with. How well we mange to follow through with those resolutions involves several factors.
MA updates signs to allow electric-vehicle parking: reader success story
Bureaucracies have some funny ways of saying they were wrong and you were right. Even if they can't tell you they made a mistake, it's nice to see them fix a problem they created. The latest bureaucracy to demonstrate this is Massport, which operates the parking garages at Boston's Logan International Airport. Their mistake was issuing me a citation for parking my fully electric 2015 Nissan Leaf in one of their parking spaces for clean-air vehicles. DONT' MISS: Zero emissions vs.
Zero emissions vs. "Hybrid": When is a Nissan Leaf not "green?"
Dedicated reader John Briggs wrote in to Green Car Reports share his unfortunate experience with the airport police in Boston. We found his story so compelling, instructive—and dare we say entertaining?—that we felt it worthy of sharing. The following are his words, lightly edited for style. Sometimes a seemingly simple plan can fall victim to poor communication.
Follow-up: In the end, I bought a Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid
In an article last fall, I reached out the GCR readers for a suggestion for what plug-in vehicle I should buy to complement my 84-mile range 2015 Nissan LEAF. The new vehicle, my wife’s car, had to handle a 16 mile daily commute, occasional 300 mile trips to Vermont (a place of few DC fast chargers), and be less than $40,000.
Battery-electric vehicle versus plug-in hybrid: why having both makes sense
Not long ago, green car fans had only one choice: a hybrid vehicle like the Prius that gets all its energy from gasoline. Now there is a choice of several pure battery-electric vehicles that get all their energy from grid electricity, several plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that get their energy from a mix of grid electricity and gasoline, and several conventional hybrids like the Prius.
Electrify America switches on the first 350 KW Fast Charging station in Chicopee, Mass.
Though it lacked the crowds and fanfare of a Tesla launch, an unveiling yesterday in Chicopee, Mass., may at least as much impact on electric-car drivers going forward. Electrify America switched on it's first of its planned 350 kw CCS Quick Charge stations. The lightly attended event is an important step in making electric vehicles competitive with gasoline powered cars by reducing charging times to about ten minutes, or less time than it takes a shopper to step into a store and buy something.

Dr. John’s Corner: Cut inflammation of the gut - The Chief News: Community
Your digestive tract takes some of the heaviest abuse of the entire body. We have a very sensitive garden of micro-flora residing in your small and large intestine. When upset, normal biological functions are disturbed. These functions involve chemically changing the foods ingested as well as protection of the organs of digestion. When the pH is altered here, it throws off normal function. The pH of your mouth is where it all starts.
Dr. John’s Corner: You are what you eat, digest, and absorb - The Chief News: Community
He presented case studies where patients with multiple bloody bowel movements, were exhausted, anemic, and had constant abdominal pain. Multiple foods aggravated them, and their diet was severely restricted. After being intentionally infected with a specific parasite, six months later were pain free, normal bowel activity, and able to eat normally, even gluten again. I’m still having trouble with this, and need to research it more. I’ve seen too many problems with parasites to be totally convinced.
Dr. John’s Corner: Don’t let lung disease take your breath away - The Chief News: Opinion
Asthma is far too common, and can be life threatening. The cause is now considered multifaceted. In some cases, it’s due to overloads in the nervous system and manifests in a state of fear and anxiety. In others it can be set off by airborne particulates, like what’s seen this time of year with inversions and trapped wood smoke. Many times, a wood burning stove in the house is out of the question with asthma. Unfortunately with the high humidity in our region, molds tend to abound in our homes.

Dr. John's Corner: Sunshine, Vitamin D to fight depression - The Chief News: Opinion
Since we’re aware of the health affects of the sun and the immune production of vitamin D, reduction of this vital component gives way to some conditions for which drugs shouldn't be the answer. During the dark winter months we see many who suffer from the condition known as S.A.D. or seasonal affective disorder. This is basically depression brought on by a lack of sunshine and low vitamin D saturation.
Dr. John’s Corner: Look for performance enhancing foods, not drugs - The Chief News: Opinion
The liver is the energy factory of the body. Over time, if the liver is compromised, vitality, stamina, and endurance are compromised. The quick pick-up gained with these substances isn’t worth the eventual price to be paid. Recently I was made aware of the nutritional focus of one of the greats in football. Tom Brady of the New England Patriots is considered old in football years, but he continues to perform at the highest level, and even after all these years, without injury.
For pickup trucks, more than half all fuel savings come in 2022-2025 CAFE rules
Sometimes, when science and technology issues have economic or political consequences, incorrect or misleading information and analyses can be propagated through the media, leading both decision makers and the public astray. A piece published in April by Forbes, covering the effects of the 2022 through 2025 corporate average fuel economy standards, is a case in point.
Should we buy a Toyota Prius Prime, Chevy Bolt EV, or Volt?
It's now time to shop for a new car for my wife, as her wonderful 2006 Toyota Prius has 144,000 miles and we're ready for something new. So I thought I might throw the question out to Green Car Reports readers. What car should replace our 2006 Prius hybrid?
2015 Nissan Leaf: one year later, owner offers pros and cons
Sometimes being a revolutionary requires a lot of personal sacrifice, and sometimes it doesn’t. After one year of driving of a 2015 Nissan Leaf electric car, I was surprised to find that daily driving with a gasoline car requires more sacrifice than with my electric. Like most people, before buying the Leaf, I had concerns about owning an electric car: battery range, charging, the impact of hot and cold weather, vehicle cost, depreciation, rebates and incentives, and more.
Why One Young Woman Bought A 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage: Frugal Shopping
Priscilla Briggs with her new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage, Boston, May 2014 Many people approach car shopping in the U.S. looking for the largest, most luxurious vehicle they can afford, from the best brand possible. Still, at least a handful of shoppers are more focused on basic transportation--and a vehicle they know they can afford. My daughter Priscilla falls into the latter category, and she recently set off on one of life's great adventures: buying her first car.
