Missing and murdered Indigenous women resolution passes at SUMA

newsoptimist.ca — February 4, 2015 10:54 AM A North Battleford-sponsored resolution calling for an inquiry or round table on missing and murdered aboriginal women has received the approval of members of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association. The resolution attracted considerable media attention and vigorous debate on the floor of the convention before it was approved by delegates by a decisive margin. The vote means SUMA has thrown its collective support behind the issue, and will lobby the federal government in support of an inquiry or round table. North Battleford council passed a similar resolution late last year, as did other municipalities in Saskatchewan and elsewhere.

Nonsense a big part of the good ol' hockey game

newsoptimist.ca — April 4, 2016 07:33 AM John Cairns' News Watch I was really struggling to come up with a topic for this month's News Watch column. But so many of the topics were boring - provincial politics, federal politics. And then there's U.S. politics, but. really who wants to read one more article about Donald Trump? Then I went online and saw the now-infamous video from Unity of fans in the stands getting into a big brawl at the end of a hockey game. Thank you very much Unity, Saskatchewan. Those fools in the stands just handed me my topic for this week's column.

Adventures in Cuba

newsoptimist.ca — February 17, 2016 06:34 AM Today the Battlefords News-Optimist has a dispatch from one of its reporters from Cuba. OK, I'm exaggerating. This is not a dispatch from Cuba; it's just a story about my vacation there last December. The reason you are seeing it now is because that is how long it has taken for me to get the photos developed. Now that they're done, I thought I would do a piece on what it was like there for any potential sun vacationers who may be interested.

That's the comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco about a CIA plot to kill North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, with two celebrity journalists recruited to do the deed after landing a major TV interview with the supreme leader. Anyway, if you were planning to see it, you can forget it. It is not coming to a theater near you. It's also not coming to theaters that are nowhere near you, either. The Interview was pulled from worldwide distribution completely by Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.
