County council passes final reading of 2026-27 budgets

The Laurens County Council passed third and final reading of the county’s 2026-27 general and fire services budgets Monday night during a special called meeting at the Historic Laurens County Courthouse. Council approved the balanced general budget of $42,463,311 that includes a millage increase by a 4-2 vote. Councilmen Justin Lane and Matthew Brownlee voted against the budget ordinance. Councilman Brown Patterson was absent. The 2026-27 fire budget of $5,546,237 passed by a 6-0 vote.

Poole wins District 4 runoff, Stumbo takes GOP nomination for attorney general

Jimmy Poole won the Republican nomination for the District 4 seat on Laurens County Council in Tuesday’s primary runoff election. The lifelong Laurens County resident defeated Lonnie Wilson with 53.35% of the vote, 773-676. “I want to say congratulations to my opponent on a great campaign, and I want the folks in Cross Hill and Waterloo to know that I heard them loud and clear, and I won’t disappoint them,” said Poole, who works as a vice-president at ProCore Pest Control.

Voters set to return to polls for GOP primary runoffs

Laurens County voters have a quick turnaround for runoff elections following the June 9 Republican and Democratic Primary elections. The run-offs, which involve one GOP nomination for Laurens County Council and several statewide seats including governor and attorney general, are set for Tuesday, June 23. Early voting will be held today (Wednesday) and Thursday of this week and limited to just two days due to the Juneteenth holiday on Friday.
