Assessing the effectiveness of long‐term monitoring of the Broad‐toothed Rat in the Barrington Tops National Park, Australia
Indices We modelled two indices, naïve occupancy based on scats and relative abundance based on the number of captures of new individuals per 100 trap nights, to determine whether they changed over time, and in relation to precipitation and annual average minimum temperature.
An ephemerality paradox: Evidence of virtual semelparity in ephemeral pool‐breeding anurans
Estimating tadpole development rate Embryos were collected from the field during the 2017/2018 breeding season to determine the mean size of offspring at metamorphosis and growth rates beyond metamorphosis. Two spawns were initially collected from different pools and raised in large 35 × 21 × 21 cm containers filled with aged tap water in a temperature-controlled room (23°C; 12 h light/dark cycle).
Frozen sperm and assisted reproduction: time to pull out all stops to save the endangered koala
Australia’s wildlife was hit hard by the 2019-20 Black Summer megafires. Amongst the casualties were our iconic tree-dwelling koalas, with an estimated 5000 dead in New South Wales alone. They are now officially endangered in three states and territories. In response, researchers are ramping up captive breeding to prevent extinction. Unfortunately, captive breeding faces two major challenges: it’s expensive, and it can be hard to maintain genetic diversity.

Human reproductive technologies like sperm freezing and IVF could be used to save threatened species
More and more threatened species are relying on captive breeding to avoid extinction. Some species on the brink only exist in captivity, and others depend on captive breeding for their recovery before they’re released to the wild. Captive breeding programs face major challenges to achieve the best conservation outcomes, particularly high economic costs, and loss of vital genetic diversity from wild populations after even a few generations in captivity.

Let's fix Australia's environment with any pandemic recovery aid – the Kiwis are doing it
The COVID-19 pandemic is causing significant economic challenges for Australia. With April figures showing more than 800,000 people unemployed and last month 1.6 million on JobSeeker payments, a key focus will be job creation. Read more: The big stimulus spending has just begun. Here's how to get it right, quickly Lessons should be learned from what’s happening in New Zealand, where the government is funding projects that revive the environment.

To save koalas from fire, we need to start putting their genetic material on ice
Thousands of koalas may have died in fires burning through New South Wales but expert evidence to a state parliamentary inquiry on Monday said we are unlikely to ever know the real numbers. Unprecedented fires have burned through millions of hectares of forest, including koala habitat and rainforests untouched by fire for thousands of years. Read more: It's only October, so what's with all these bushfires? New research explains it The devastation won’t stop once the fires are out.
