First, do no harm
“First, do no harm.” Doctors adhere to this oath. Our city officials should, too. They will soon vote on the 300-unit The Terrace apartment project at the corner of West Patrick Street and West College Terrace. This gargantuan development is too large for the location, especially when added to the 179 units going in a few hundred yards away at the two new Junction apartment buildings. This many units means 1,500 people plunked down on one city block. That is too many.
Election audit wouldn't get outcome some seek
Frederick News-Post contributor Rick Blatchford called for a national audit of our presidential elections in his Nov. 25 column, "Time for comprehensive nationwide election audit." That's not a bad idea. But he stated that "Leftists say that 'it’s a dangerous idea' to question the legitimacy of elections." On the contrary, it was President Trump on Election Night who dangerously declared himself the winner before half the votes were even counted. The president did not call for an audit.
Not just Baltimore
I am writing in response to Brian Baumgardner’s recent letter in which he stated that President Trump was correct about Baltimore being “a rodent infested mess.” Yes, Baltimore is a city with serious problems. No, President Trump was wrong to single out Baltimore. Baltimore lost its well-paid, union manufacturing jobs, first to Japan, then to Mexico, and now to China, automation, and modern robotics. The jobs left, and they were replaced by unemployment, despair and drugs.
Criminals are not allowed to own guns
We thank The Frederick News-Post for supporting the proposed common-sense bill before the General Assembly in Annapolis to close the loophole that makes it too easy for convicted domestic abusers to access firearms (“Keep all guns out of hands of abusers,” News-Post, Jan. 28). By law, these criminals are not allowed to own guns.
Public plaza idea well-intentioned, ill-conceived
Your call for a public plaza at the post office site on the corner of Patrick and East streets is well-intentioned. However, many American cities, both small and large, that created such open-air plazas have regretted doing so. The expected benefits never materialized. Instead, dead zones of empty space were the result, especially in the evening after work hours when downtown workers drive home to the suburbs.Frederick is a wonderful, lively city because people live and work downtown.
