Wild Rally From 4-1 Down to Beat Cougars in a Shootout
Down 4-1 four minutes into the third period on Howl-o-ween night, the Wenatchee Wild looked headed for a quiet finish. Instead, they scored three times in less than six minutes, tied the game, and beat the Prince George Cougars 5-4 in a shootout at Town Toyota Center. It was the Wild’s third straight win, and their first three-game winning streak since December 2023. They’re now 6-6-1-0. The Cougars fell to 3-7-0-2. The first period ended scoreless.
Wenatchee High Panthers Shine in Sports, Band, and Food
It was a busy week for Wenatchee High School students. Wenatchee High has two athletes headed to state. Junior Lily Hansen won the district diving championship at the Moses Lake meet. She’s also the only Panther competing in both swimming and diving, which means a lot of time in the pool. Lily Hansen (Junior) via Wenatchee High School Lily Hansen (Junior) via Wenatchee High School Sophomore Brooklyn Biwer placed 13th at the cross-country district meet to qualify for state.
Every Climate Pledge Arena Concert From Now Through 2027
Have you seen a show at Climate Pledge Arena? The iconic arena, in the shadow of the Space Needle, offers a great concert-goer experience with strong sightlines and sound, plus plenty of nearby dinner options. Traveling from out of town? It's easy to get there by hopping on the Monorail from downtown.
Trick-or-Treat on the Ave, Plus Halloween Facts to Share
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and downtown Wenatchee is ready. The Wenatchee Downtown Association hosts its annual Trick-or-Treat on the Ave from 3 to 5 p.m. It’s free and open to everyone. Wenatchee Avenue closes to cars between 2nd Street and Orondo Avenue, so kids can wander from shop to shop without watching for traffic. Second Street and Orondo stay open to east-west traffic.
Wild Swap Defensemen, Then Crush Medicine Hat 7-2
The Wenatchee Wild made a roster move with the Saskatoon Blades. Wenatchee acquired 2007-born defenseman Isaac Poll and a 2030 fourth-round pick. In return, the Blades get Wild captain 2006-born defenseman Josh Fluker and two fourth-round picks in the 2027 and 2030 WHL Prospects Drafts. The reason is personal. “Josh came to us and said he needed to be closer to his parents,” said general manager Bliss Littler. Fluker made 176 appearances for the Wild and Swift Current and posted 41 points.

5 Cheap Date Ideas in North Central Washington That Don’t Suck
Cuffing season is here, which means a lot of us are either starting something new or trying to keep something going. And most of us are watching our wallets. The good news is a great date doesn’t need a reservation or a big bill. Some of the best ones cost next to nothing. Start with tastings. Wine, tequila, bourbon, whatever you like. Tasting events are usually inexpensive, come with a small spread of food, and feel friendly and social. They’re hard to get wrong.
5 Washington High Schools Cut Football Seasons Short
Friday nights usually end in November. This year, five Washington high schools stopped playing varsity football well before then. Andy Barnes of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association says midseason cancellations at the 3A and 4A level are a first in his 20 years with the WIAA. Todd Beamer in Federal Way, a 3A school, ended its varsity season after injuries piled up and the roster thinned. Hazen High School in Renton did the same, citing injuries, attrition, and academic suspensions.
$25 Pinnacle Beerworks E-Gift Card for $12.50 This Friday
You may remember 18 N. Mission St. as the Wenatchee World’s press building. These days, it’s where they brew beer. Pinnacle Beerworks occupies the old space, with a big open interior and a patio, so you can watch the brewing while you eat. Peter and Ben, the two owners, bring 15 years of industry experience. Their goal was simple: build a real gathering place for Wenatchee, with great brewing, good food, and hospitality for friends, families, and neighbors. It’s family-friendly and welcomes everyone.
15-Year-Old Parker McMillan Scores First WHL Goal in Wild Win
For ten games, the Wenatchee Wild had done the work without the reward. The shots were there, the effort was there, and the scoreboard wasn’t cooperating. On Sunday at Town Toyota Center, that changed. The offense finally showed up. The Wild beat the Kamloops Blazers 5-4, snapping their losing streak and giving the crowd a back-and-forth game to remember. Each team scored three straight goals. The score was tied twice, and the lead changed hands twice. Wenatchee struck first.
GTA 6 Launch Day Could Drain $1 Billion From the Economy
I remember the first time I tried to beat Super Mario Bros. in the 90s. I probably spent an entire weekend inside, eyes glued to the screen, thumbs sore. When I finally rescued Princess Peach, I felt like I’d won something real. So I understand the pull. That’s why one economist’s estimate caught my eye.
Win a Year of Pet Food at Coastal’s Halloween Costume Contest
Somewhere in the Wenatchee Valley, there’s a dog who looks great as a hot dog. A cat has finally agreed to wear a cape. On Halloween, Coastal Farm & Ranch in East Wenatchee wants to see them. The store is hosting a pet costume contest on Saturday, October 31. Bring your pet dressed up and enter. Every entry goes into a drawing for a year’s worth of Nutrena pet food or animal feed. That’s a big prize, especially if you’re feeding more than one hungry mouth.
TSA Quietly Reverses Gate Access, but Sea-Tac Still Has It
Remember meeting someone at the gate? For a few weeks this fall, it felt like 1995. You could park, clear security, and wait at the gate to hug someone coming off a plane, or walk a traveler to their flight. No boarding pass needed. TSA called it Gateside by TSA PreCheck, and for a moment it brought back something air travel hasn’t offered since 9/11. Then it quietly got smaller. The program started small. It soft-launched on September 9 at 13 airports.
6 Healthy-Aging Myths Doctors Want You to Drop
Advice about aging comes from every direction, and much of it sounds sensible until a doctor reviews it. Real Simple recently collected six myths that physicians say are worth rethinking. Several of them are things many of us accept as inevitable. Start with sleep. The idea that older adults need less of it doesn’t hold up. Most still need seven to nine hours a night. Sleep patterns may shift as you age, so you might wake earlier or more often, but the need hasn’t gone anywhere.
7 Things You Should Think Twice Before Buying Online
Online shopping makes it dangerously easy to spend money without leaving the couch. With a few clicks, a refrigerator is on its way to your door. But AARP’s list of purchases better made in person is worth reading before you hit checkout, because the convenience can cost you later. Some things need a test drive. Take appliances. When a washing machine arrives damaged, or it’s the wrong model, convenience turns into a headache fast.
AI Just Cracked America’s Top 10 Fears (My Local Ones Differ)
Chapman University has released its 12th annual Survey of American Fears, and for the first time, artificial intelligence is in the top 10. In fact, it’s in there twice. Just over half of Americans (51.9%) fear AI could harm the political process, which ranks third. Another 49.7% worry it will hurt the economy, which ranks seventh. 1. Corrupt government officials (61.1%) 2. U.S. becoming involved in another world war (58%) 3. Artificial intelligence harming the political process (51.9%) 4.
Drive-Thru Coat Drive Returns to Wenatchee This Saturday
This Saturday, October 24th, you can help a local kid stay warm without even leaving your car. Coats for Kids, presented by People’s Bank, is holding a drive-thru drop-off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Albertsons parking lot in Wenatchee. Pull up, hand over what you’ve brought, and you’re on your way. The date is Make A Difference Day, and the event is a team effort.
Washington’s Cost of Living Is Rising Fastest in US
It was a harsh gas station reality check. I drove to Spokane yesterday to see my mother, and on the way back through Moses Lake, I stopped for gas. $5.69 a gallon. I sat there for a second, staring at the pump and doing the math on what a full tank used to cost a few years ago. Turns out I'm not imagining things. A new report confirms Washington has quietly become one of the most expensive places in the entire country to live — and the trajectory is worse than the current ranking alone suggests.
Get a $25 Mission Burgers & Chicken Gift Card for $12.50
Wenatchee has plenty of places to grab a burger. Mission Burgers & Chicken is one of my favorites, and it’s the kind of spot that keeps locals coming back. Founder Christian Mikkelsen grew up in Wenatchee and brought his culinary background home. He cures and smokes his own bacon and pastrami. The beef is locally sourced, and the buns come from Bosket Bread in Leavenworth. Even the seasonings and toppings are made in-house. You can taste the effort.
Les Misérables and Oklahoma! Are Coming to Leavenworth in 2027
Leavenworth Summer Theater has announced that two giants will dazzle under the stars for its 33rd season. Les Misérables will debut at the Ski Hill Amphitheater, and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! will run alongside it. The two musicals alternate from July 9 through August 28, 2027, for 30 performances in all. “Les Misérables is an epic story of courage and second chances,” said Executive Director Christy Shearer.
Wild Staffer Camps Out Again to Honor Local Veterans
Today, David Rayfield is setting up camp at Town Toyota Center. He’ll sleep on the arena’s balcony until he’s sold 1,000 tickets to the Wenatchee Wild’s Military Appreciation Night game. It’s his seventh campout in a row. Rayfield, the Wild’s Senior Sales & Operations Coordinator, has already spent more than 22 days up there over six years. He can head inside for the restroom, but otherwise he stays out in whatever weather arrives.
23 Things You Can’t Legally Throw Away in Washington
Washington bans 23 specific items from regular household trash, mostly for environmental reasons — keeping hazardous materials out of landfills where they can leach into soil and groundwater. Batteries, electronics, paint, motor oil, and certain chemicals fall under this umbrella, along with less obvious items many people toss without a second thought.
16-Year-Old’s First WHL Goal Sparks Wild Comeback Bid
Jake Mintenko is 16, and Saturday night will be remembered at the Town Toyota Center, where He scored his first Western Hockey League goal. It came at the 12-minute mark of the second period and kept the Wild alive in a game that was slipping away. It also made a little history. With Mintenko’s goal, every skater on Wenatchee’s active roster now has at least one career point in a Wild uniform. Riley Brown followed 26 seconds later, punching in the second of two point-blank rebounds to make it 3-2.
Wild Blank Vees 2-0 as Tvrznik Stops 40 Shots
Wenatchee and Penticton have a long history. The Wild and the Vees spent eight seasons as neighbors in the British Columbia Hockey League before both jumped to the WHL, and their games have rarely been quiet. Friday night at Town Toyota Center was no exception, even if the scoreboard stayed still for a while. Tobias Tvrznik and Penticton’s Kaenan Smith each turned back everything for the first 38 minutes. Together, they stopped the first 36 shots of the game.
A $9 Beer Makes Washington America’s No. 2 Priciest State
Yes, going out to eat has gotten more expensive over the past few years. But we still feel the need to splurge and enjoy life. But at what cost? A new study from Manhattan Mental Health Counseling ranked the most expensive places in America to have a social life. Researchers compared 48 states, adding up what people pay for the basics of going out: a casual meal, a cappuccino, a beer, a movie ticket, and getting around, including transit passes, taxi fares, and gas.
Powerball, Mega Millions Top $1 Billion: What to Do If You Win
Neither jackpot has landed in weeks. Powerball is now estimated at $600 million for Saturday night, with a cash option of about $246 million. Mega Millions climbs to $403 million for Friday, with a $162.1 million cash option. Together, that’s more than $1 billion. The odds, of course, haven’t changed. Powerball odds are 1 in 292.2 million, and Mega Millions odds are 1 in 290.4 million. Take the Powerball cash option.
The Old Wenatchee PUD Building Is Now a Haunted Museum
When the Chelan County PUD moved from downtown Wenatchee to its much larger campus in Olds Station, it left behind a big, quiet building. The Wenatchee Valley Museum has found a use for it. The Haunt returns this October with a new experience, and the pitch is simple. Guests tour a vacant building. Or is it vacant? Groups will follow a guided tour deep into the old PUD offices, past stairways, dark corners, and confined spaces. The museum’s tagline says it plainly: fear is real.

Costco’s $8.99 Tote Bags Have Shoppers Comparing Them
You know the routine at Costco in East Wenatchee. You walk in for a few things, leave with a cart full, then load the trunk and hunt for a cart corral. A good tote bag won’t solve all of that, but it’s a start. Costco now sells a two-pack of canvas totes for $8.99. One is extra-large with red trim, and the other is smaller with navy trim. Both come in cream-colored canvas, with exterior pockets and an embroidered Costco logo. The larger bag also has an interior pocket.
What a Teal Pumpkin on Halloween Night Really Means
Eating at a restaurant takes planning in our house. Someone I love can only eat food that’s gluten-free and dairy-free, so every menu turns into a puzzle. We ask questions, read labels, and have learned to bring a backup snack. Halloween makes it harder. The whole season centers on candy, and almost all of it is off-limits. You don't want to forget to watch a kid or a loved one sit out the best part of the night. If you see a teal pumpkin on someone’s porch this October, it’s not just a color choice.

Where Washington’s 10 Top Colleges Rank in America
Four-year college now costs anywhere from $31,000 to $65,000 a year, including tuition, room, and board. That’s a hard number to swallow, and it’s why families keep asking the same question: which schools actually give you your money’s worth? WalletHub tried to answer it by comparing 738 colleges and universities nationwide. The company scored each school on 30 measures, from student-faculty ratio and graduation rate to loan default rates and median salary after graduation.
Wild Land Veteran Forward Ty Coupland in Blazers Trade
The Wenatchee Wild made a move Tuesday, acquiring WHL veteran forward Ty Coupland from the Kamloops Blazers for a sixth-round pick in the 2027 WHL Prospects Draft. Coupland is a 19-year-old from North Vancouver, British Columbia. He’s in his fourth full junior season and is close to his 200th WHL game. He’s 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, with 46 goals and 60 assists in 194 career games for Swift Current, Red Deer, and Kamloops. His best nights have been loud ones.
This Ex-KING 5 Anchor’s Podcast Now Reaches 100 Countries
In the late 1990s, I knew Mark Wright from our time working in Spokane's KXLY broadcast house. He anchored the news downstairs for KXLY Channel 4, while I hosted an afternoon radio show upstairs on popular 92.9 KZZU. A couple of years ago, we ran into each other by chance while waiting in line at Lumen Field. I wasn’t expecting a podcast update while waiting to get into a Sounders game.

The other is American Idol alum Brooks Rosser, who will share the stage with him through the tour’s final U.S. date. Rosser announced the news on Instagram and said he was “beyond excited.” His first show, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, will be his first since American Idol. The shuffle follows a very public dispute.

The “Graveyard of the Pacific” Has Sunk 2,000 Ships
At the mouth of the Columbia River, where a river fights the ocean, two enormous forces meet head-on. The river pushes outward, backed by the weight of an entire watershed. The Pacific pushes back with tides, wind, and swells that have crossed thousands of miles of open water. Where they collide, the Columbia River Bar earns its nickname: the “Graveyard of the Pacific.” The river also drops millions of tons of sediment here every year, so the sandbars and underwater channels never stay put.
This Wild Employee Will Live on a Balcony for Veterans
A balcony, a goal, and seven years of showing up. On Monday, October 19, David Rayfield will walk out onto the balcony at Town Toyota Center and settle in. He won't come back inside until he's sold 1,000 tickets to the Wenatchee Wild's Military Appreciation Night game. It's his seventh consecutive campout. The Wild's Senior Sales & Operations Coordinator has now spent more than 22 days on that balcony over the previous six years, ducking in only for restroom breaks. The weather gets whatever it gets.

Leavenworth Backpacking Pro Shares Her End-of-Season Checklist
Jenny Abegg, a Leavenworth-based gear tester and co-founder of BetterTrail.com, just wrapped up a stretch most backpackers only dream about — five nights sleeping outside out of seven, with trails, glaciers, and scree slopes stacked one after another before the mountains shut down for the season. "It's that time of year when the mountains go absolutely all-out before shutting down for a month or two, and I wanted to make the most of it," she wrote in a recent newsletter to subscribers.
How to Push Your Car Past 200,000 Miles
New and used car prices have climbed high enough that holding onto what you've got makes more financial sense than ever. The real secret isn't magic — it's discipline, starting with following the owner's manual, and not your gut. I'll be honest, my vehicle's manual normally gathers dust in my glove compartment. Your car's maintenance schedule isn't a suggestion. It's a roadmap telling you exactly when things need attention before they become expensive problems. Oil changes top that list for a reason.
These States Just Overtook Texas as USA’s Top Moving Destination
For years, Texas was the undisputed king of American migration — the state everyone fleeing high costs and cold winters pointed their moving trucks toward. That's no longer true. Between July 2024 and July 2025, North Carolina overtook Texas as the nation's top destination for domestic migrants, gaining roughly 84,000 more residents from other states than it lost. Texas followed with +67,000, and South Carolina came close behind at +66,600.
