Letter: Could they live up to the standards they're demanding?
To the editor — For those who missed the administration's "Four Pillars to Reform the Federal Workforce," here is a quick summary. Pillar No. 1: Federal employees must return to office. Federal workforces will be consolidated with office and physical locations possibly changed. Pillar No. 2: Performance Culture. The best employees that America has to offer. Excellence at every level, rewarding those deserving and addressing those who don’t meet the standards which taxpayers have a right to demand.
Letter: Yakima loses an irreplaceable doctor, human being
To the editor — How sad for the Yakima community that we have lost a truly one-of-a-kind physician/surgeon. I had the pleasure of working with Dr. John Place for over 20 years he will be missed. Working in surgery is a stressful occupation, tempers flare when cases don’t go as planned. Working beside Dr. Place, I never ever saw him lose his composure — a quality that made people want to work beside him and was truly a rare commodity. Quality would best describe this man.
Letter: Community owes Rotarians a lot of gratitude
To the editor — Scholarships, Greenway children’s play equipment, Franklin Park venue, Yakima Aquatic Center and now Farmers Market venue. Just a few of the many endeavors with which the Yakima Rotarians have improved our lives in the Yakima Valley. Service above self. Thank you! JOHN HERMAN Cowiche

A Toast to Wentworth Cheswill
Linoprint by John Herman. Courtesy photo Raised in an era known for the trade of sugar and slaves, Wentworth Cheswill became the first African American elected to public office. Like Paul Revere, he rode as a messenger for the patriotic cause. He was also an early archaeologist who donated books and funds to establish his community’s first library. I believe his story could inspire generations, if only people knew about it.
Letter: Antlers-horns discussion worthy of a smile
To the editor — Antlers vs. horns brought a smile to my face. I have always taken the antlers approach in this heated controversy; however, I understand where Rob Phillips is coming from. Many years ago, I would charter out the Pacific Charters in Ilwaco with owner-operator Milton Gudgell. Before we left the dock, he would go over all the important safety equipment and procedures at sea.

Book Review: ‘Lone Eagle’ by J.A. Herman
Long Island has long been home to many important events in the field of aerospace, particularly during World War II, leading to its iconic nickname as the “cradle of aviation.” In an effort to help keep the island’s aviation history alive for the next generation, Port Jefferson Station resident John Herman has written a historical fiction book, “Lone Eagle.” Children will be delighted to join 12-year-old Clementine, the protagonist of “Lone Eagle,” on her adventures during the golden age of...
Letter: Actually, Eric Meyer's actions speak loudest
Letter-writer Susan Gerard gives credit where none is due ("Kate Brophy McGee's actions speak loudest"). She claims to "believe child safety and health care (and education) are important.” But if you agree, then you should vote for Eric Meyer for State Senate in LD28. He has fought for these causes consistently in good times --and mostly bad times.

(Re)Structuring Journalism
Should news organizations be content to be in the content business, and give up the fight to stay in the news distribution business? And does it matter? No. And yes. Very much. These are questions that Ezra Klein tees up very nicely in a smart piece in Vox the other week, about how the media is increasingly becoming more like wire services, publishing via platforms others control, like Facebook.

Kansas lesson for Ducey: You can't slash and burn
Gov. Doug Ducey need not follow the failed example of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, who learned that a state cannot slash and burn its way out of a budget crisis if Dorothy ever wants to find her way home. ANALYSIS: What Doug Ducey REALLY said WHO SAID IT: State of the State bombshells Our state should have learned from past efforts to replicate here the failed anti-gay, anti-women, anti-immigrant ideas of Kansas theoreticians. There is a looming $1 billion in red ink in a budget of nearly $10 billion.
Sitting in my parked car at Roosevelt Field mall
Once while sitting in my parked car in the Roosevelt Field mall's north lot, beside the busy intersection leading to Old Country Road and beyond, it occurred to me that every passing automobile was a survivor of thousands of split-second decisions of its driver over the course of its operating life.
