How much does it cost to charge an electric car?
Thinking of switching to an electric car ? Finding out how much it will cost you to charge is the first answer you need to find out. Sadly that answer isn't simple, because it depends on where and how you charge. Charging at home is usually much cheaper than using public chargers. But even at home, costs vary depending on your energy tariff and the type of charger you install. Public chargers add another layer of complexity. Prices change based on the charging speed and provider.
What are the mileage rates for petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric cars?
What can drivers claim back if they use their own car for business journeys? Grey fleet drivers (employees using their own car for work) can claim at a much higher rate than anyone in a company car or van. The idea is that this covers not only the fuel, but costs like wear and tear and insurance, which the business would pay for if it was a company car.

How to reduce your company car tax bill
how to reduce your company car tax bill To mangle an old saying, only two things are certain in this world: death and company car tax. You can't avoid the first, and however hard you try to dodge the second, you'll always end up paying something. Of course, this assumes you have a company car, but with around 700,000 people in receipt of one, the chances are reasonably high that you do.
My 70-year-old V8 Chevy 350 is easier to live with than a Ford Focus
Elliot Florio has been waiting rather a long time to own a supercharged, two-door '55 Chevy 350 sedan. "I'd been looking for one for what felt like forever," he says. "Since I was 19, in fact. Finally, I bought this one a few weeks ago from a guy in the owners' club. I'd waited months for him to offer it for sale.
My 1992 V8 Range Rover only costs me £100 in repairs each year
"It's a genuine Chelsea tractor," says Mike Hurst, pointing to the Chelsea & Kensington parking permit on the windscreen of his 1992 J-reg Range Rover 3.5 V8 Vogue SE auto, finished in Ardennes Green. It's not his permit: it was there when he bought the car 19 years ago, unbelievably from a chap at the roadside.

Supercars to make money on
Supercars are not only for the super-rich, discovers John Evans, even in the current economic climate. Just look at these 20 gems as shrewd investments… From the price of a new Volkswagen Golf to the price of a modest detached five-bed house in Surrey, there’s a supercar for every budget.
I converted this abandoned Renault Twingo into a rally special
John Evans Lying in the bath one morning last March, Eric Troestler, a Frenchman living in London, read a story in a car magazine about the annual Twing Raid, a rally for first-generation Renault Twingos. "It sounded fun but I didn't have a Twingo and had never driven one," he says, somewhat surprisingly. However, fate has a habit of striking at the most unlikely times.

Every decade has its defining cars, models including the 'E30' BMW 3 Series in the 1980s; the Subaru Impreza WRX in the 1990s; the BMW Mini in the 2000s; and the Tesla Model S in the 2010s. The current decade? We'll leave history to decide that, but the Jaecoo 7 could certainly number among the models most associated with the period. From a standing start in March 2025 to the end of the year, just over 26,000 Jaecoo 7s were sold.

My 90-year-old Hudson was the bootlegger's getaway car of choice
John Evans Sporting whitewall tyres, Ray Smith's cream-coloured 1936 Series 62 Hudson Terraplane convertible-coupé looks every inch the classic American sedan - except it was made in Brentford, west London. Actually, make that 'assembled', because the cars arrived in the UK from the US in kit form as a way of avoiding import duties.
Renault Caravelle 1100: The beautiful 'poor man's Ferrari' with 55bhp
John Evans "It's what I call a 'yes, but' car," says Danny Maclean of his Renault Caravelle Convertible 1100. "Yes, it has brakes, but they have no servo. Yes, it has steering, but it's not power-assisted. People used to call the Caravelle a poor man's Ferrari. I think you'd need to have a drink or two to see it like that, but still, it is rather beautiful." He's right about that.

This is the trailblazing Baroque artist Michaelina Wautier, who placed a self-portrait into The Triumph of Bacchus, in a striking statement of her ability and ambition.
Why buying a 33-year old Mercedes SL is brilliant – yet brutal
John Evans "It would be thousands of pounds to renew the electrical system and the same again to renew the 12 hydraulic cylinders that power the roof mechanism." I'm confused. A moment ago, Zag Ji was telling me about the work he's had done to his 1993 Mercedes-Benz SL 500, but now he's talking as if it hasn't yet happened. And then the penny drops: his wife is in earshot. "My wife is not far away," he whispers, before adding: "But it's all right: she knows." Well, if she didn't, she does now.
"Councils can do more..." The truth about the pothole pandemic
pothole Ineffective repair practices, poor financial controls and a lack of long-term maintenance planning by councils are among the reasons Britain's motorists are experiencing record numbers of potholes, claims an industry expert. For the 2025/26 financial year, the UK government handed councils an extra £1.6 billion for highway maintenance and has pledged a further £7.3bn over the next four years.
The best British used cars to buy today
John Evans We believe these cars are hard to beat, and this is our guide to tracking down the best example: The Range Rover has been Britain's unofficial ambassador for more than 50 years. Our favourite is this third-generation version. It was developed by BMW and offers a fine blend of performance, luxury and off-road ability, and prices for this model are fair.
I'm a serial Lotus buyer – the Evora is better than an Elise
John Evans Chris Smith bought his first Lotus, an Elise S, in 1996, when he was 23. "It was my only car and people said I was crazy," he recalls. "But every journey was great fun. I had it for seven years." He'd owned a BMW 3 Series before and it was another German car that subsequently replaced the Lotus. "I bought a Porsche Cayman," he says.
Public tackles speeding as authorities refuse to act
John Evans An increase in the number of speeding drivers across the UK has sparked more members of the public to take speed monitoring into their own hands and these groups claim lawmakers are refusing to act, despite being presented with evidence of reckless driving and even collisions.Since 2022, speeding fines nationally have increased by around 15%, according to freedom of information requests.
Frank Warren happy to let Moses Itauma fight Oleksandr Usyk now
On Saturday night, Itauma’s first headline appearance in the UK attracted a large crowd to Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena and he passed his toughest test to date by stopping Jermaine Franklin in the fifth round. Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) currently has other business to attend to.
I paid £1500 to clean my 2019 Mini – it was worth every penny
John Evans Stick or twist? To replace the car or keep it? It's a dilemma with which many car owners are familiar. One solution is to obey that old motor trade saying: 'Buy at two years, sell at four.' The argument goes that by its second birthday a car has suffered its steepest depreciation. It's now much cheaper than it was new but still feels fresh and has at least 12 months of its factory warranty to run. It's a smart buy.
Fun for all wages: Bag a bargain sports car this spring
John Evans We all love a bargain, but what exactly is a bargain? According to the dictionary, it's something that costs less than its true value. It's difficult to imagine the motor trade offering anything for less than its true value, but nevertheless we reckon we've mustered 25 used performance cars that cost less than you might have expected. Of course, the risk with such an exercise is confusing 'bargain' with 'cheap'.

Across the United Kingdom, water quality and infrastructure remain prominent topics in the media.
Check out these obscure classic microcars
John Evans At a recent Sunday-morning classic car meeting, I was minding my own business and just about to tuck into the customary – and very tasty – bacon sandwich, when a small, yellow box purred past me, doing around 15mph. It came to a stop in front of the assorted Triumph Stags , Lotus Esprits and Ford Mustangs , then one side of it opened to reveal the driver.
Cybertruck hits the UK: Can EV beast win over London's car fans?
John Evans You might have read about sightings of a strange alien craft on Wimbledon Common earlier this month. For anyone unfamiliar with it, the Southside Hustle, which takes place in Wimbledon Village, south-west London, on the first Sunday of every month, has in the few short years it has been running become a mecca for petrolheads keen to show their cars—everything from wheezy classics to the latest exotics—to an admiring throng of fellow enthusiasts.
Revealed: the best used cars in every segment
British car buyers love used cars. Case in point: more than 7.6 million were sold last year, outperforming new models four to one. The top 10 best-selling used cars form a failsafe selection, many of which ticking the most important boxes for most buyers. Key to their appeal is their genuine value for money and reasonable ownership costs. Indeed, this criteria will be high on the agenda for many prospective buyers, especially when new cars continue to rise in price.
National analysis of cancer mortality and proximity to nuclear power plants in the United States
Abstract Understanding the potential health implications of living near nuclear power plants is important given the renewed interest in nuclear energy as a low-carbon power source. Here we show that U.S. counties located closer to operational nuclear power plants have higher cancer mortality rates than those farther away.

I saved £25k by buying a German Lotus instead of a British one
As a twenty-something back in 1990, Simon Bailey dreamed of owning a Lotus Carlton, Vauxhall's 176mph supersaloon that raised questions in the Commons and rattled the likes of BMW and Mercedes. A quarter of a century later, he has realised his ambition, although the car on his driveway is not a Vauxhall but its Opel equivalent, the Lotus Omega. It's a left-hand-drive example from Germany, imported three years ago.
I'm 74, and I'll keep my mad mid-engined Clio V6 as long as I can
John Evans With just 400 Phase 1 and Phase 2 examples registered in the UK, either on the road or on SORN, a Renault Clio V6 is a rare sight – and that's just how Martin Hassett likes it. “I like things that are rare and unusual,” he tells me. “My father never drove, so I have no desire to own anything from his era. Instead, I like things that are unusual, such as Alfa Romeo SZs and low-production vehicles. "My other car is a 1997 Mazda RX-7 – which, incidentally, hardly consumes any oil.
Keeping the lights on - the Kia EV6's ultimate party trick
John Evans Three years ago, Nissan celebrated building 250,000 Leafs at its Sunderland plant by using one to power a giant Christmas tree, complete with reindeer, outside the factory. There was snow (real, not fake) on the ground too, making the whole scene look very festive - well, as festive as a grass verge next to a chain-link fence and a security hut can look. To use an EV's drive battery in this way requires the vehicle to have V2L (vehicle-to-load) capability.

My £40k Humvee has a 6.5-litre diesel V8 - and it's a fine city car
John Evans "I grew up playing with figures like Action Man and not video games, so to own a Humvee like the one he drove is a dream come true," says Samuel Ogunlana. Note, it's a Humvee, the US military vehicle – full name High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle that first saw action in 1989 in Operation Just Cause, when the US invaded Panama, and not a Hummer, the popular civilian utility vehicle that looks a lot like it.
Younger enthusiasts needed to reverse classic market slowdown
John Evans The historic vehicle market is worth more today than it was five years ago but growth is slowing dramatically and more must be done to increase the number of young enthusiasts if it is to survive in the future.

On patrol with the police unit hunting drink- and drug-drivers
It's 5pm on a weekday in Guildford, Surrey. For an hour, members of Surrey Police's Vanguard Road Safety team have been stopping motorists to warn them about the dangers of driving under the influence of drink and drugs, when they strike 'lucky' and nab a drug-driver. Clues? His car reeks of cannabis and there's a box of the stuff on his dashboard. The driver's saliva is found to contain illegal levels of THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis, set at two micrograms per litre of blood.

Garages divided over government review of MOT cost cap
Garages are arguing that the price of an MOT test should be heavily increased as the government begins a review into the £54.85 fee cap, established 15 years ago. However, there are also concerns among some garages that increasing the fee too much will put off drivers and start a price war that will be fiercer than the one seen today. That's because some centres are willing to take a heavy loss on each test as it is one of the few ways of attracting new customers.
