Plasmon-enhanced reductive defluorination of PFAS in water under ambient conditions
Abstract Photo-driven, plasmon-enhanced catalysis enables polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) degradation in water under ambient conditions. Here we show that ultraviolet (UV) irradiation-induced localized surface plasmon resonance drives reductive defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, two legacy contaminants.
FeS Colloids Trigger Antimony Redox Cycling, Colloid Formation, and Ultimate Fate during the Anoxic–Oxic Transition Click to copy article link Article link copied!
Abstract Click to copy section linkSection link copied! Antimony (Sb) mobility in subsurface environments is tightly coupled to iron (Fe) geochemistry, yet the roles of ferrous sulfide (FeS) colloids in controlling Sb fate across anoxic–oxic interfaces is not well understood. Here, we systematically elucidate how FeS colloids trigger Sb redox transformation, colloidal formation, and ultimate sequestration during anoxic–oxic transition at circumneutral pH.

Surface-Engineered Nanomaterials in Water: Understanding Critical Dynamics of Soft Organic Coatings and Relative Aggregation Density
Inorganic–organic nanocomposites, typically as an inorganic core with surface organic coating(s), have received interest as potential platform materials for sensor, catalyst, sorbent, and environmental applications, among others. Here, we describe the critical role of organic surface coatings with regard to the colloidal stability of engineered manganese oxide nanoparticles (MnxOy NPs).
Delineating the Relationship between Nanoparticle Attachment Efficiency and Fluid Flow Velocity
The ability to fundamentally describe nanoparticle (NP) transport in the subsurface underpins environmental risk assessment and successful material applications, including advanced remediation and sensing technologies. Despite considerable progress, our understanding of NP deposition behavior remains incomplete as there are conflicting reports regarding the effect of fluid flow velocity on attachment efficiency.

Sensing Mechanism of Ethanol and Acetone at Room Temperature by SnO2 Nano-columns Synthesized by Aerosol Routes: Theoretical Calculations Compared to Experimental Results - Journal of Materials Chemistry A (RSC Publishing)
SnO is a semiconducting metal oxide that is broadly employed as the active sensing material in chemiresitive gas sensors. Recent studies demonstrated the capability of SnO sensors to detect various gases, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), at room temperature. To explore the sensing mechanism, the adsorption of ethanol and acetone on the SnO (110) and (101) surface facets is investigated via density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations.

Photoenhanced Oxidation of C60 Aggregates (nC60) by Free Chlorine in Water
While there have been a number of fundamental studies focused on the physical and biological behaviors of C60 aggregates (nC60) in model environmental and engineered systems, the aqueous reactivity of C60 (as nC60) is much less understood and remains a critical gap in accurate lifecycle modeling. In this study, facile, photo-enhanced physicochemical transformations of nC60 in the presence of free chlorine, a globally applied disinfectant, are quantitatively described.

Effects of ultraviolet light on silver nanoparticle mobility and dissolution
Nanomaterials are subject to various physical, chemical, and biological transformations, necessitating a better understanding of the impact of “aging” processes on nanoparticle fate and transport in engineered and natural porous media. The objective of this study was to evaluate the mobility and dissolution of citrate-coated silver nanoparticles (nAg, 11 nm diameter) in water-saturated sand following ultraviolet (UV) irradiation with UVA (320–400 nm) or UVB (280–320 nm) light.
