Growing Stronger Hops: How Resilient Varieties Can Protect Brewing’s Future
Climate change has the potential to reshape agricultural systems around the world, and hop production is no exception. Brewers need hops that can accomplish two goals at once: deliver compelling flavor and brewhouse performance while remaining reliable under growing pressure from drought, disease, and unpredictable weather. One of the most promising solutions lies in the development and adoption of resilient hop varieties.

Defense Contractors Increasingly Seek Agile US RF Manufacturing
RF components by Coaxicom are advancing communications across the globe. Following renewed White House calls for faster production, defense contractors are increasingly seeking agile U.S. manufacturing to support RF communications. Engineering teams often need to move quickly.
Unlocking Reliability With New Hop Solutions for Every Brewer
“Inside the New Science of Hop Quality” explored how hop selection has evolved from instinct to data-driven precision. Here we look at what happens next—because selection alone can’t close the year-over-year gaps that every brewer faces. No matter how skilled the panel or how perfect the harvest, sensory drift happens. Climate variability, crop stress, and process nuances can all nudge a hop’s aromatic fingerprint in unexpected directions over time.
Inside the New Science of Hop Quality
Historically, the phrase “high quality” in hop selection has been shorthand for a few specific, albeit superficial, factors: in-spec alpha-acid levels, low seed counts, and vibrantly green hop cones, among others. A hop that smells great in the field or the belief that it’s “supposed to be a cool variety” are often cited as markers of quality.
Better Brewing through (Sensory) Engineering
Consistency is more than a goal in brewing—it’s a benchmark. Creativity keeps the craft exciting. Innovation opens new doors. But it’s the ability to deliver a consistent product, pint after pint, that earns loyalty and builds a brand. However, hops are an agricultural product, and crops vary. From one season to the next, even slight shifts in aroma or acid content can throw off a recipe dialed to precision. That’s why we at John I.

Getting Along Original
What horrifies me leaves you unconcerned. Why? “Politics,” Henry Adams observed at the turn of last century, “has always been the systematic organization of hatreds.” It’s a hard observation to argue with during our quadrennial exercise at national self-redefinition.
What one election poll is telling us
Perhaps you saw the poll that showed the percent of Americans who answered “yes” to the question, “Will who wins the election make a great deal of difference in your life?” has grown from 21% in 1996 to 62% today. If you’re like me, and you used to worry about voter apathy, perhaps you too think we should have been more careful what we wished for. Elections are important, because politics allocates power, and power can do good or it can do harm.
Harris won the debate, but will it matter?
A quick follow-up to the debate. All the pundits–even a lot of Republicans–are saying this was Kamala’s night, and if you saw it, or read them, you know why, and you probably agree. I do too. But it wasn’t a sweep. Kamala didn’t lose a vote, but did she cut into the undecideds? Or into Trump’s base? Because if she wants to win, it seems she needs to.
Trump, tariffs, and daycare Original
Donald Trump’s appearance at the Economic Club of New York has been getting a lot of attention. The Washington Post reports: Former president Donald Trump gave a confusing answer Thursday when asked about making child care more affordable, suggesting the costs would be brought down by his proposed tariffs on foreign nations.
Harris-Nixon 2024? Original
Kamala Harris has yet to give an interview as of this writing, which is probably smart: For months prior to her ascension, voters have been telling pollsters that while they preferred Trump to Biden, they actually preferred a “generic Democrat” to both. Harris has, thus far, managed to incarnate that generic Democrat role. Wisely, she’s distanced herself from her more progressive–and less popular–past.
FORUM: Fiftieth Anniversary of Nixon’s Resignation, Day One Original
Reflections on long-tangled webs Fifty years ago this week President Nixon resigned the presidency in a cloud of scandal. What does this anniversary mean today? Over the next three days, nine thinkers—historians, political theorists, and journalists—will offer their reflections in response to this question. *** The exorcism of America John Haas On the evening of August 4, 1974, my teenaged self was in the first row of a soon-to-begin Grateful Dead concert at the Philadelphia Civic Center.

Hint: it has to do with grocery prices.
Calley, Thompson, and remembering My Lai Original
We learned yesterday–at the end of July–that Lt. William Calley, aged 80, died back in April. That lag indicates that his wish that he could “sink into anonymity” was close to becoming reality. But, here we are reading about him, as he surely knew we would.
Questions and presidents Original
Some questions can only be put to rest with an affirmative answer. The United States experienced the worst economic depression of its history up till then in the mid-1890s. Unemployment, which had been at an admirable 4% in 1892, shot up to as high as 18% two years later. And in 1897 when the new Republican president, William McKinley was inaugurated, it still hovered close to 14%.
A Primer on Peace
Give plain speech a chance At the tail end of the 1960s and the early 1970s the American landscape was awash in countercultural artifacts. There were natural foods stores, with their creative calligraphy, rustic interiors, and exotic aromas. Women with wire-rimmed glasses and long hair and skirts floated about looking like they’d just emerged from the prairie. Psychedelically decorated VW buses were everywhere.
Gerontocracy
One thing I learned about aging–through study and talking with people many years ago when I was a deacon at a Presbyterian church and on the task force for ministry to the aged–is that the 80s are hell. Biden and Trump may be separated by only 3-4 years, but those years are crucial ones. It’s not the same as between someone who is 27 and someone who is 31. The difference between a person in their mid-70s and them in their mid-80s can be immense. I say “can be” because there’s no rule to it.

Without fear or favor: the D.A. who convicted a president Original
Among the most repeated spins regarding former President Trump’s recent conviction is that it was pursued by a liberal Democrat, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. We are expected to conclude that “liberal Democrat” is all we need to know about the case–that the actual specifics of the ex-president’s wrongdoing are immaterial. It is often added that Bragg ran for the office of D.A. on a promise to bring this indictment against Donald Trump. Most of that is true.
Farmer's Wife Magazine on Memorial Day Original
In 1921 the editors of The Farmer’s Wife Magazine meditated on the evolution of Decoration Day from solely focused on remembering the sacrifices of Union soldiers in the Civil War, to encompassing those of the South, and then by the force of a more humane logic, to thinking about all those who have suffered on account of war.
