1. Introduction Although renowned mostly for his political philosophy, especially as it was presented in his major work Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes was also a leading representative of the new mechanical philosophies that began to dominate natural philosophy in the early seventeenth century. While his major rival, René Descartes, was a substance dualist, believing in mind and matter, Hobbes arguably took a more strictly mechanist line and insisted that there was only one substance, matter.
