Efficacy of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome vaccines in animal models: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Abstract Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne zoonosis that threatens both animal and human health across East Asia, yet no licensed vaccine is currently available. We therefore conducted a PRISMA-guided systematic review and meta-analysis of preclinical murine and ferret studies to evaluate severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus vaccine efficacy. Seven electronic databases were searched for studies published between 2009 and 2025.
Mitochondria-derived vesicles with bioenergetic units from brown adipose tissue attenuate cardiac remodeling post-myocardial infarction
Abstract Post-myocardial infarction remodeling is a major cause of heart failure, with contributions from multiple organs. Brown adipose tissue protects against cardiovascular disease, but the mediators of brown adipose tissue-heart crosstalk and their roles in cardiac remodeling remain elusive. Here, we show that mitochondria-derived vesicles from brown adipose tissue transfer to cardiac macrophages and attenuate pathological remodeling via anti-inflammatory effects.
Dysregulated alveolar type 2 epithelial cell proteostasis promotes fibrogenic macrophage migration inhibitory factor-CD74 signaling
Editor’s summary Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) involves alveolar type 2 epithelial cells (AEC2s), but how these cells contribute to disease or recovery is not fully mechanistically understood. Kim et al. used aging and genetic mouse models to better understand the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) in this context. Deletion of the cullin 3 gene in AEC2s to model UPS impairment caused fibrosis on its own and exacerbated experimental fibrosis in mice.

Fishing for “complements” with vascular organoid models of microvascular disease
Main text COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has led to an unprecedented global health crisis uniting the medical and scientific communities. Substantial research progress has highlighted the complex pathogenic interplay between viral infections, the immune system, and the vasculature. 1 Gu S.X. Tyagi T. Jain K. Gu V.W. Lee S.H. Hwa J.M. Lipid remodeling in megakaryocyte differentiation and platelet biogenesis - Nature Cardiovascular Research
Lipid remodeling, from fatty acid transport and de novo lipid synthesis, is necessary for megakaryocyte differentiation and platelet production. Dietary saturated fatty acids, impaired fatty acid transport and/or dysfunction in lipid biogenesis can contribute to low platelet counts.
We’re scientist spouses with five couples in our labs. Here’s what we’ve learned about working together
Our postdoctoral fellow came by our offices distraught, seeking advice. His wife’s adviser was moving to another institution, leaving her in urgent need of a new postdoctoral position. To make matters more complicated, she would soon give birth and needed a position that offered some paid maternity leave. We listened sympathetically and suggested some options, most of which the couple had already considered and discarded.
