D-Day veterans mark 82nd anniversary as nearly 100 British names added to memorial

Some of the last remaining surviving UK veterans are commemorating the anniversary of D-Day, 82 years since the allied invasion of northern France in World War Two. The huge operation, which took place on 6 June 1944, saw British, American and Canadian troops storm beaches along the Normandy coastline to begin the liberation of France from Nazi occupation.

John Tye flew Concorde planes for two years [John Tye] A former Concorde pilot said having the opportunity to fly the supersonic plane was "beyond my wildest dreams". John Tye, from Bristol, watched from the fence at London Heathrow as the inaugural flight to Bahrain took off on 21 January 1976. Twenty-three years later, he piloted a Concorde jet himself. According to British Airways, Concorde flew almost 50,000 times with more than 2.5 million passengers until it was retired in 2003.

'MND took our son at 14 - anyone at any age can get it'

The family of a teenage boy who died after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) has warned the rare, degenerative condition can hit "anybody at any age, at any time". Kyle Sieniawski, 14, from Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taf, died on 27 November, after being diagnosed less than a year ago with MND. The disease typically affects people aged over 50, and Kyle is believed to be the youngest person to have died with MND in the UK.
