Kudos for two opinion pieces
Quick kudos for two informative efforts from Feb. 14. One, Judy Murphy's epistolary lasso on Board of Education bronco Colt Black ("School board needs to make strong statement about Black's comments"). kAm%H@[ E96 ?:46=J '2=6?E:?6VD s2J A68865 4@==23@C2E:@? 36EH66? Bipartisan crackdown on have-nots is inhumane
In October, 1962, National Geographic’s 50-page cover saga “California’s City of the Angels” cast L.A. as a “western ... Colossus,” “The Workshop of the Space Age” and “Babylon on the Freeway.” And, via photos, a Shangri-la with palm fronds. kAm#@F89=J c_ >@?E9D 27E6C :E 2AA62C65[ x 8@E 2C@F?5 E@ C625:?8 :E]k^Am kAm$?@H65 :? 3J |2CJ=2?5’D W2?5 ?6:893@C:?8 DE2E6D’X “q=:KK2C5 @7 ’ee[” x C642== 36:?8 DECF4< 3J E96 3@F?5=6DD[ DF?\5C6?4965 8=66 @7 2 J@F?8 H@>2?
Hogan's run might be snake oil, troubled waters
Talk about politics making (in a weird way) strange bedfellows. For all the enmity that roils America, according to a Gonzales Maryland poll, at the conclusion of two terms as governor, Larry Hogan’s overall 77% approval rating included 68% of Republicans and a jaw-dropping 81% of Democrats. Go figure. Now (after a brief fling with the “No Labels” charade), he’s running (as a Republican) for the U.S. Senate seat that has been ably filled by Ben Cardin (D). kAms:D4=@DFC6i |F49 2D x C6=:D9 3:A2CE:D2?
SALT of the Earth: Jimmy Carter and the fate of the nation
Between Jan. 20, 1969, and Jan. 20, 1993, the White House was held by a Democrat for just four years. Ironically, in that span, the dominant party was rocked by two of our history's biggest scandals (Watergate and Iran-Contra). During the former, Richard Nixon's own tapes revealed some true colors not found in nature: those of the quasher of an FBI probe into a GOP-funded break-in at the Dems' D.C. HQ, plus those of a bellowing expletive-spewing lout-mouth.
Lennon persisted in his quest to play keyboards
Thank you for the well-written-and-photo-illustrated "Lennon's Ivories" about John Lennon's piano. To one who grew up about a mile from the present site of Alex Cooper Auctioneers (before, during, and after The Beatles' heyday), it strikes quite a chord. Allow me to share-and-connect some back story. While Lennon was musically and vocally gifted, his mother was disinclined to raise a child. Hence, he grew up with an aunt who, for all her kindness to him, was not so keen on music.
Survey Says: Cremation is Still a ‘Burning’ Desire
Published in the July 2021 Issue of Memento Mori by John T. McQueen, CFSP How do you ignite a conversation in a room full of funeral directors? Toss in the word “cremation.” It will spark conversation—some good, some bad. But in all cases, you will witness myriad emotions. It may be hard to believe that some funeral professionals are still adamantly opposed to cremation.
Grieving the Loss of a Furry Friend: Serving the Pet Parent as Part of Your Firm’s Offering
Published in the December 2021 Issue of Memento Mori By John T. McQueen, CFSP During my 35-year career as a funeral director, I have heard many families say a multitude of things about their deceased family members, from accolades to things I wouldn’t dare put in print. Some felt relief, some felt devastated, some shed tears, while others were celebrating. The range of emotions could be as erratic as the weather.
We must honor and defend our vote-legitimized governance
About a month after President Richard Nixon resigned, I read a 112-page book of collected lectures called “The Real World of Democracy.” Its main point was that just about any regime can paint itself “democratic.” For instance, author/professor C.B. Macpherson points out how, by purporting to provide what the masses wanted and/or needed, even the USSR was wont to do so. Small world.
The truth: How tyranny ends
For the first time ever, we see what you might call an undead President. That cannot be a good thing. Let none say we weren’t warned. In July 2019, Donald Trump claimed the right to do “as President ... whatever” he might wish. One would have hoped 10-year-olds would have known better — and that adult citizens (seeing how even King George III, whose yoke our founders fought off, could not go that far) would have been unabashedly alarmed. There’s more.
Equal justice should be our goal
With all due respect to Board of Contributors member Rick Blatchford, he’ll do well read from Matthew 7 and Luke 6 on the need to focus on larger, not smaller transgressions. At length, on Dec. 29, he blasts some miscreants who allegedly “obstructed streets and sidewalks,” and others who (according to the not-so-reliable Breitbart News) “chased two men down the street, shouting obscenities.” Does Mr. Blatchford know that convicted, pardoned fraudster Steve Bannon once helmed Breitbart?

The right's 'freedom from facts' serves no one well
Is it too much to ask that the letters you opt to run adduce some real-world supporting facts/data? In that light, Charles E. Hubbard’s “Three years later, nothing on Trump” (Nov. 7) could use some further review — going forward — something more substantial than his fact-free screed might better edify and refresh your readers. “The people,” he writes, “will show how tired of [critiques of President Trump] they are come elections.” Oops. On Nov.
Hogging the pigskin: Will women get their kicks?
In the eighth grade, I took up football — and stopped growing. Two years on, as an Ant Man-size end, I still hoped to one day grace the NFL — as a kicker. Just one problem. Though strong, my leg was about as limber as a facemask. Seeing the pros’ feet spike over their respective heads made it clear that I lacked the main attribute.. Meanwhile, it dawned on me that ballerinas, Rockette, and sundry female athletes could stretch like senators making promises.
So you want 'exceptionalist' healthcare?
By its title alone, Mona Charen’s “So, you want Canadian health care?” (8/10) doubly misleads. Single-payer funding (now aka “Medicare for All”) originated not in the Great White North, but in postwar Britain. And it belongs not just to hockey players and lumberjacks, but to all advanced nations. Save ours. For us, that’s nothing to be proud of. She makes wait times (admittedly, a Canadian sore spot) her be-all-and-end-all. Funny thing, though.
Old-school jetty trout-fishing tactic
The Empire jetties have been producing trout like these for Capt. Lloyd Landry for decades. Not everyone has the luxury of decades of experience in locating intricate and productive incongruities along the bottom. Even searching for them on depth finders can seem like searching for a needle in a haystack, not to mention the best time to do so is when the water is calm and the fishing is optimal.
Alumni Council Spotlight: 50 Years Ago, Colgate Jan Plan Changed My Life

Each student selected a university-approved project, or a “Jan Plan,” and spent the month doing course work, research, volunteer activities or travel exploration.
'You want to make God laugh? Just tell Him your plans'
“You want to make God laugh? Just tell Him your plans.”Songwriter/singer/six-stringer Merle Haggard loved that saying. In his last years, his plans were twofold. One, quality time with family at their California ranch. Two, long and demanding concert tours. For all the allure of hard-won, homespun ease, he felt crowds (and the space between them) fueled an endless drive to put feelings and experience into words and music.
Whatever you call it, 'Trumpcare' is no improvement
Call it by its proper name: the American Health Care Act. Or by its nickname, “Trumpcare.” Or even (shades of Voldemort, of Harry Potter fame) “that which is so bad, we dare not speak its name.”Lest we forget, having damned the Democrats’ Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) for years, Republicans in 2016 vowed to improve on it.
